Marijuana butts a problem for puppies, small dogs

Jaime McLaren was horrified when Wrigley, her four-month-old chocolate lab, fell to the ground in agony after a walk in Vancouver last week.
The dog couldn't stand up, and started having tremors, McLaren told CBC News.
"It was traumatizing," she said. "I immediately burst into tears and thought it was going to be a fatal incident."
She rushed Wrigley to emergency care.
"The vet determined it was marijuana, likely a butt that he'd picked up while on his walk and ingested," she said.

The visit to the vet cost Jamie McLaren $150 for the exam and the charcoal induction treatment to detoxify her dog. (Jamie McLaren)
"I don't think people necessarily know of a simple action like throwing a butt on the ground, and the resulting impact that can have."
The vet that treated Wrigley could not be contacted, but Dr, Christine Bradbury, a vet at Burrard Animal Hospital told CBC News that marijuana is a serious health threat to many animals.
"With very small puppies and small dogs it becomes a greater risk because their body weight is so small that if they were to ingest a large amount it could lead to comas, seizures or even death," she said.
Pet insurance company, Trupanion says in 2014, it paid out over $20,000 in confirmed marijuana toxicity cases in Canada and the U.S.
Within Canada, Trupanion says, British Columbia presents the highest number of claims.
Wrigley's visit to the vet cost McLaren $150 for both the exam, and the charcoal induction treatment to detoxify her dog.

This is setting up the story of a great dog owner, she doesn't pay attention to her dog doesn't even know what it ate, and then plays the victim. Wonderful, just what the world needs another irresponsible dog owner.

Look I lost 2 couches and had to redo my entire floors because my dogs ate strips out of the carpet, I'm not about to blame that on someone else. If your kid eats something off the sidewalk who's fault is that? Pay fucking attention, it's your job as a dog owner and a parent.

That and my dogs have never touched pot ever, none of the dogs I've ever owned wanted anything to do with pot. I find it fishy when dogs willingly eat pot, especially a roach those things smell horrible.

Nothing new
Yea i speak on this constantly. Frankly i find it animal abuse if you intentionally dose a pet, and neglect if accidental and yiu should no longer be allowed to own a pet.

It looks like a k2 etc overdose as its a more potent agonist. I've personally seen the classic dribble (peeing all over the place) and loss of motor control, all the way to the full agonist seizures and such
On doses smaller than you or i would even notice effects

300 mg will do me right ("patients" with no tolerance often take but 100mg) Divide that by 30 as the binding affinity is 30times less.. and you get 10mg. You know any 200lb cats or dogs? Now divide 10 by 10 for a 20lb cat
1mg will fuck up a cat....not feel effects but fuck him up
Again I've personally seen od's

(It is a great way to study weed overdoses though..and yes its possible)

hmmm ....look butts are small, your dogs nose is closer to the ground than you are, sometimes you looking both side to side, or they are running around, and its VERY easy for dogs to pick up something eat it and either it be TOO late to get it out or call drop it, or notice it
i dont think anyone FULLY STARES at their dog outside to see what they are doing no way ..and if anyone tells me they literally stare at their dog i call bullshit

this isnt about marijuana butts, what this really comes down too is reducing litter around the country , stop throwing cigarette butts, pop cans and garbage everywhere not only our pets eat them, but so does other animals.

if this article was about a regular cigerette people wouldnt be so defensive its ONLY because its about marijuana, the users here will be defensive because most of them think marijuana is the end all be all of medication/drugs but to be completely honest it is no good for animals

the fact is this dog was not a full adult dog it was a puppy they do not have the tolerance or proper immune system to be resilient after they have eaten something that can hurt them.

my dog has gotten into a lot of bad food items, but never marijuana, however in highschool my friend and i baked pot brownies we stored them under his bed in tupperwear containers and his dog ate all of them, he had to take his dog to the vet and it was a scary thing

dogs get sick it happens... and not always by owners fault, my dog got really sick after we went for a walk, i thought maybe he ate something , or got hurt, turns out he had a little cut on his paw that no one would ever notice unless looking for it..and he walked through some river water on our hike and got a blood infection..
is that owner negligence? absolutely not. it was an accident

like i said i think people are only going to be defensive about this article if their a pot lover..when what they should do is not thrown their butts on the ground.

I think we're defensive Sunni because this is ridiculous...as you say their noses are closer to the ground and it could have been anything that went up it's nose...how on earth was it determined that is was mj?...and my cat loves to eat fresh leaves off my plants...and I let her...

They have specific side effects on animals
Vets see it all the time it's very easy to determine marijuana in a dog or cat

I've personally seen what mj does to a dog and it isn't funny it's pretty sad

Well if someone is stupid enough to feed their dog 1/4oz of weed they get what they deserve...I think we are talking about a roach that went up a dogs nose ffs...surely there are far more harmful things that they lick, sniff, or eat....mj is always the bad guy and it's getting old....

They eat shit every day... :)

We had a SPITS who loved hash. He'd try and chew the piece right out of your hand if it was good or he'd turn his nose and walk away if it wasnt.
The funny part was he could sniff out " repress "...

The spits would bark at everything and never shut up!...
well... for two days he didnt make a peep..o_O. we didnt say anything about the fact that our once noisy spits, couldn't even bark let alone hold his head up.
We figured thats where our two grams of hash disappeared the night before..
After one day, he had not changed..on the second day...
Same old same old barking nasty annoying spits... maybe a bit better mentally wise though... now he searches out any good smea in the house and OPH other peoples hash...
we turned the little fucker into a hash hound :bigjoint:

its a fucking weed that does no or minimal harm...just like to people...

No..
And not just like to people. Its a full agonist, as jwh018 is to humans. it can cause death and very serious side effects. Its many times more potent to most animals and pets. As sunni said, the side effects are specific.
Cannabis is not some magical plant, im sorry.. but i love weed as much as anyone.. a roach, with activated cannabinoids (resin) can be very harmful especially to smaller animals

Also its not perfectly safe in people. Dont romanticize the plant. It obviously activates cb1, 2, "3" and "4" along with many other pathways. While this can provide relief of certain conditions, activating any receptor also has other effects. Gaba is hit strongly in dogs, one of the first signs of thc overdose s lack of coordination and even inability to stand, seizure threshold is also drastically decreased. But guess what, its the same receptor that cause yu to have reduced anxiety and short term memory loss in weed...just like xanax or alcohol, other compounds that hit gaba.
Thee is no drug that can hit a receptor without getting everything that receptor encompasses.

Dosing pets is very dangerous if you dont know what your doin

any one that owns a dog that eats stuff on walks needs to get that dog on a gentle leader immediately. If your dogs head is on the ground your dog isn't listening to you or paying attention to it's surroundings. Puppies especially.

I realize dogs eat things, I used to deal with my dogs going after kleenex outside, it's their favorite thing and who know's what's on them. As a dog owner it's my responsibility to pay attention to my surroundings and ensure my dogs don't eat shit off the sidewalks. Have my dogs got Kleenex in their mouth? Yup, and I've chased it down their throat in the middle of the street and been puked on, dogs don't eat kleenex outside anymore, inside it's still an issue.

My dogs can each pull a car on their own and jump 6 feet from a standing position, I walk them together you can trust that I am ALWAYS paying attention to my dogs when outside my house. Leaves are also a favorite of one of my dogs when they blow down the sidewalk it's on you're not paying attention and you're going with him literally, it will look like a Marmaduke strip with a person bouncing off the sidewalk on the end of a leash.

If there's any question to what pot does to a dog watch the video I linked that dog could have easily died.

Who the hell doesn't throw roaches on the ground? It's going to rot away within weeks. What are stoned people supposed to do now? Bury them every time? Climb a tree and put it up there? Putting them in your pocket isn't a great call, I know that.

oh stop blabbin shit you dont really know for sure yourself and that youve only read about

Yes sure.... they say dope can kill a dog...
A dog at a weight of only 20 pounds ingested 2 grams of hash and survived.
I doubt any person would knowing leave that amount for dogs to chew.. :)

Ya... this topic is a wee bit OUT THERE PEOPLE...
this kind of shit happens... get over it.. animals eat shit every day and die..
get used to it.. its not going to stop now that you make sure your roaches get disposed of properly... :lol...
and the dogs wont die... :) not from what I witnessed. We sure thought it was dead as that is what we were told by Vets...I guess they were 100% WRONG!!!!!

Pplease.

find something worth while to complain about ... this one is sad ....

I always put my roaches in my pocket. I am near a lot of schools and parks and wouldn't want my kids finding roaches so I take them home with me so other people's kids don't find them.

I've found bags of weed taking the kids to school in the morning, picked it up right there in front of a bunch of parents and put it in my pocket and came home and threw it out.

I used to squish all my cig butts when I smoked too, that was not because of kids but because of sick older folks that went around picking up cig butts instead of buying their own or quitting.... fucking weirdos man.
