Maple Leaf Indica Input Wanted

I just joined this site today and am enjoying the various sections and threads.

I'd love to hear about other people's experiences with Sensi's Maple Leaf Indica. Never before have I grown a strain that had a wider variety of descriptions among people who have grown it. Some people say the plants grown short and stout like you'd expect from an indica. Others say it grows tall. Some say that it has dark, wide leaves--like a maple leaf (again, what you would expect from an indica). Others say the leaves are lighter green and narrower, like a sativa. Some say it's skunky, others say it has a sweet, maple-like flavor and aroma. It is said to have aphrodisiac qualities, which I don't really hear about with other strains.

The things everyone seems to agree about: This is a pure indica, an old, established IBL that came out of Afghanistan many years ago.

Like I mentioned above, the descriptions among those who have grown it vary widely. Here's my experience:

After growing this strain a second time, I'm a bit intrigued by it. I obtained a 10 pack of Sensi MLI seeds 8-10 years ago. Shortly after getting them I started a grow, and almost as an afterthought I added a single MLI. The other plants had a week or two headstart, and since I thought the MLI would grow relatively short, I wasn't expecting much from it. Boy was I surprised. As an IBL, it started a bit short. Then it took off and reached a towering height--and I have no shortage of vertical space in my grow area. Topping it didn't help much. I trained and tied this plant more than any sativa I've grown. I actually cut it down a little early because it was a bit of a hassle and unmanageable compared to all the other plants. My thought at the time was, "Yeah, RIGHT, a pure indica. I don't think so." It did have a distinct flavor that was sweet and mapley, I'll give it that. And the single plant had a high yield. It cured to a fairly dark color. The buds were long, not fat. The high was typical indica, with adequate strength and a couchlock high. It was a real head scratcher. I enjoyed the smoke for its unique qualities and shared some with a few friends, two of whom LOVED it. One even described it as "sweet, syrupy maple heaven."

I ended up packing the seeds up and storing them properly for the past several years. A few months ago, I pulled them out and germinated a couple for a grow I just harvested. This time I knew what to expect and viewed the MLI plants with a bit of trepidation. After growing out two more females (regular seeds, not feminized) I consider this to be an extremely unstable strain. This time I topped both in veg--twice. I got two distinctly different phenos. One shot up and and grew tall, with long buds. The other was much shorter and more manageable. The yield on both was good. The flavor of each varied a bit. One was the bomb, and was definitely the best of the three I've grown so far. Sweet, maple flavor with a piney and hashy quality as well. The other is nice, too, but not nearly as impressive. Of course, as fate would have it, the great-tasting plant was the tall one--which is also the one that matured quicker. Strange..

At this point, I find this to be a very interesting strain. With seven beans left, I plan to grow them out and possibly cross the best pheno to a Skunk # 1 that's worked well for me in the past.

If any of you have grown Maple Leaf Indica, please share your experience with it.

old guerilla grower (outsider named "SilverBack") loved it and grew outside. He grew it at about 37 latitude during that time. Search for him. He passed in late 2008, heart-attack tending crops. Look north to the RCMC collective. ask around for "BreederBart". Best I can do.

I have grown it twice including one grow of f2 seeds I made from the f1 seeds from Sensi. All mine were very similar and maybe 2x stretch in flower, no more than that and maybe less.

I got a earthy flavor from the smoke not that sweet like some say. The leaves were fairly broad not sativa at all. Yield was above average. Leaves were more dark than light and the cured buds were covered with dark red pistils. Potency was quite good with a balanced effect not too down and out like some indicas.

" The Seed Bank " 1990 Catalogue / Nevil

Original Afghan Mix

This seed line comes directly from the collection of the late 'Maple Leaf' Wilson, reputedly one of the first collectors of true Afghan seeds. He was called 'Maple Leaf' because he grew some of the first lndicas that had been seen in America, and their broad leaves could only be compared to maple leaves. Our Afghan Mix was propagated from his original Afghan stock, completely unselected, therefore possessing all the variety that existed in the original gene pool. Due to the extreme variation that exists between the seedlings, this mix is recommended for serious breeders and collectors only.

Sold in special breeder's pack of 50 seeds. Price: $150

The Maple Leaf came from a guy known to me as Jim Ortega. We traded seeds for a while. Not only did he supply me with Maple Leaf, but also Garlic Bud and Kush 4. The cannabis smoking world owes him a lot.

The Maple Leaf line provided me with a plant that I labeled Afghan T. This plant is the mother of Super/Ultra Skunk and also crossed well with HzC.

Kush 4, I crossed with NL2(which had the same Kush smell) and this Kush Hybrid is the foundation of todays Kush lines.

Garlic bud has also made it's presence felt and is part of todays super yielders.

Let me say one more thing about ML AfgT. This plant had exactly the same smell as Sams best SK1 but more so. It is the true Skunk archetype. I do not believe for one N.Y. minute that Afghani#1 is behind the SK1, which IMO gives credence to the Mendecino Joe story about SK1.

The world owes you a big Thank You Jim!
Let me be the first to say that I appreciate the work that you have done.

So you mean that there is no real pure Kush landrace commercially available, just crosses with NL2? Is he where the Ortega Indica came from? Do you know anything about that strain?

I'm not getting into " kush " debate ....... take nevils words for what they are. but some kushes like l.a. affy, maybe bubba, some are just landrace kusk / hash plants from india, afgani collected buy hippy's and saved in cali or nevil also sold kush 4 crosses ......

Yes, the shantibaba ortega line came from nevil who got original seeds from ortega. so ortega gave him seeds, nevil ran them all picked stock then sold 50 seed breeder packs in 1990 for $150.00 .... How much you think a pack of 50 original would be worth today ? Lol.

I'll post another few quotes after this regarding n.l. and foundation it laid. His seeds at the time elite so all the heads purchased them and kept the best and started making seeds or just smoked it . So beside bag seed, hippy trail, nevil, or other outlet like knowing a guy who traveled looking for seeds most of the foundation came via nevil. But say colorado cough ( n.l. 5 / haze keeper cut from original n.l. 5 / haze someone found after running nevil seeds. many famous cuts today came from these seeds. )

1990 The Seed Bank ( catalog that people in usa ordered from in 1990 first main source for true F1 seeds ) - NL 5 x Skunk F1's, Silver Pearl, Silver Pearl x Haze, Super Skunk, Skunk 1, G13 x Hash Plant F1's, NL 5 x Haze F1's, northern lights 1, northern lights 5 x northern lights 1, big bud, etc ...... Nevil sold all these into usa for 3-4 years late 80's early 90's and guys even back then in the b.o.e.l. use landrace they brought to cali and purchased nevil's crosses. The boel had green houses in cali and did mega haze growing and affy etc ...... making seeds ( chucking ) and making large runs for profit. the very popular organic soil mix you hear about today " from coot " is from clackamas coot from the b.o.e.l. gang that pumped kine buds into cali on a large scale in 70's early 80's. he had cuts from early 70's affy, they imported thai stcks, etc .....

So most everything today came from this that unfolded by guys roaming the hippy trail, south america, india and bringing seeds to usa, and nevil who was a breeder and worked his gear and collected keepers from the usa, europe, trading .....

The n.l. 5 / haze , others are not the same as the original strains that came from nevil in early 90's. Without naming names many people are running seeds sold today and not seeing same results or getting keepers as good as the ones from original stock from 80's-90's by nevil or other breeders/seed banks from that time, using these original lines.

I went to the US to pick up the original US NL5. It wasn't in the same league as mine. The NL boys from the US came to me for my NL5 offspring. It was much better than the original.

Nevil

---

Mine were from that plant (US NL5) and all of the brothers and sisters seemed typical of the line, except one. I expect it was a throwback. It's hard to glean information about breeding from underground sources, but I can assure you that I've spent a lot of time analysing the results of the original NL lines. My NL5 seemed to have characteristics of NL2 and NL1, but had completely dropped any Thai influence from the mother. If you have bred enough plants containing indica, you will have seen some of these throwback indicas. They are not all great, but the short indica like 8 week anomaly will pop up.

Nevil

---

I met the Indian to obtain the US NL5 cutting two years after getting the seeds. This was the only NL cutting that I ever got. If I ever sold seeds from this US cut, it wasn't for long. It was already superseded before it got it.

Nevil

---

When I say NL5 did not cross well with Maple Leaf, I mean it didn't fizz. I didn't find that many indica/indica crosses did. Indica to indica/sativa did. As a breeder who puts a product on the market, you find you have to deal with a few issues. What people say they want and what they really want. All those people who now seem to be against 1:1 matings would be the first to hammer you in public if they didn't get what they want in one packet of seeds. Remember brocolli man?
Predictability and genetic diversity do not go hand in hand. So you let them belittle you for doing 1:1 matings and they post pictures of the best buds in the world.

The market has changed since my day. Medical cannabis is more prominent. If you are looking for a particular effect, yield is not as important. If you say, forget about yield, I could blow you away, but few do.

Nevil

---

When I first got the NL varieties, there were 8 types, 1-8.
They came with descriptions, which I published in my catalogue. These descriptions may not correlate with what later developed. The original intention was to purchase seeds from the US NL growers. It didn't work out and supply dried up. I kept the lines separate and inbred them. NL1 and NL2 stabilised into distinct types and NL5 only produced one unique individual.
NL1 was a full blood Afghan indica. One thick main stem, dark green leaves, modest yield with nuggety buds, a little coarse with good resin production, which when ripe went golden. The high was narcotic. The seeds ranged from tiny to massive. I used to love the big ones. Large fat heavily and darkly mottled seeds. Selecting for these seeds made this Afghan even coarser. It was fun to show people these seeds.
The best line of NL1 actually came from the smaller seeded types, better high and bud structure.
There weren't many pure indica lines around in those days. Big Bud, Hash Plant and G13 were pure indicas in my estimation, but were cuttings. NL1 was the only good pure Afghani male line I had.( there was Sams Afghani#1, but that was toxic in a bad way) The NL2 was a Kush.
I put the NL1 out there as a pure strain. I wasn't popular. People would tell me, "give me the pure strains", but if it cost them 10% of their yield they would complain, well try 50%.
The pure indica hybrids were more popular. NL1 x HP and NL1 x G13 were the best. At least people could use the word pure (very popular). But they were good!

I expect that a lot of people holding what they believe to be pure indicas today, would find, if the truth be known, that the sire line traces back to NL1.

Nevil

---

The NL 1-8 were seed lines and most were hybrids. A couple of years after getting the seed, I went to the U.S. to get the U.S. NL5 cutting. It didn't turn out to be as good or even that similar to my NL5.

Nevil

---

I smoked the early Kali Mist, it was good. It deserved to win a cup. I remember the Cambodian story and I didn't believe it at the time. I think that it was a NL5xHzC crossed with a predominantly sativa type. Excellent hybrids can be made using an F1 5Hz parent, but there is not many of them left anymore. I never took Simon seriously after that.

Nevil

---

That's right OS. I did go to the States later and pick up the original U.S. NL5 mother and it was as it was described to me, part Thai. But my NL5 didn't seem to have any Thai influence. I spent a lot of time analysing the NL lines, in particular NL5.

I only saw evidence of two indica male lines in the NL series and that was NL1 and NL2. My best bet was that NL5 was a combination of NL1 male line and US NL5 female. I guessed that US5 was 50% NL2. Northern Lights 2x5 was the best that I could do staying within the line (pure NL).

Northern Lights changed the face of cannabis genetics (and many a smoker), but it was mostly through NL5. You've got to marvel at fate for dropping that one extreme plant into the lap of a budding seed breeder.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting that. I guess pure landrace Kush would be a low yielder anyway, probably only good for breeding or maybe personal use. Just gotta find the best "Kush" seed line out there, knowing it's really a hybrid of some sort. Kind of makes the term Kush very vague though. I guess people just like the sound of it. Did the genetics really come from the Hindu Kush? No way to even know that. I've bought hand rubbed hash directly from a producer in the mountains of India and it wasn't particularly potent though not bad.

BTW, I also got Lebanese seeds from a real Leb whose family grew it, and it was really quite weak, though very resinous and wide leafed. Guess that's why you never hear of Lebanese weed, just hash. Had tiny seeds btw.
