Mainlining - How many toppings?

I have some seeds sitting around that never got used, and i was thinking of trying something new. After looking at some growing techniques, I settled on mainlining because it seems like people can get impressive results with few plants. I'll be growing 3 plants in a 4x4, with a 1000 watt LED light.

I have seen a lot of people stop with 2-3 toppings and wanted to know the reasoning for it. Has anyone tired topping 4 times? Was it worth the extra time and effort? How many times is recommended to top for an indoor grow?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Time is always a factor for a lot of people. Space is another. I’m currently doing my first mainline and I’m stopping with 8 colas, one more step would be 16 tops and that could get crazy, well I plan on stopping, sometimes crazy is good too. I would do the 8 tops in that space, that’s gives you 24 colas and off shoots.52B59F0B-7FB8-41CF-9AE6-79F2B676A7E4.jpeg
8 tops about a month old.

I tend to top twice so that I have 4 main stalks.
I have done as many as 8 but it was counter-productive. There was too much foliage from tertiary branches and choked out the center of the plants.
This is one of my girls with 4 main stalks.
