They work but mushrooms are pretty hard to grow because everything needs to be 100% sterilized or the spores will die by ANY other kind of mold bacteria etc. Your best bet is to look up PF tek, they sell mason jars at retail stores right about now. You just need one without a neck.
Buying a kit will just waste your money, they're that hard to start. Once they take they are strong though

Yes the mushroom kits will work.
You could also just replicate a kit and buy all the supplies from wal-mart and home depot.
If you want a 100% working product, because it can sometimes be frustrating creating your own glovebox and fruiting chamber (plastic cracks like a motherfucker), then I would recommend mushbox.
They have all the supplies to grow mushrooms besides the spores, and they also have good prices.
Here is a kit that comes with everything you need to grow mushrooms (besides spores), it even comes with 12 pre sterilized BRF jars (the jars are re-usable, too).

If you decide to go with that kit, while not necessarily needed for growing mushrooms, its definitely worth it to make a glovebox.
My glovebox is just a clear sterlite tub with 2 four inch holes in the side (about shoulder width apart), with 4 inch PVC couplings (with threading) and 4 inch PVC plugs.
A glovebox is a draft-free sterile environment to innoculate your jars in.
And to get spores, there are 2 reliable vendors that I recommend, they are Sporeworks and Spores101. Spores101 is billed in canada (so you cant use pre-paid visas, unless they allow international orders). Sporeworks is billed in the US so you can actually use a pre-paid visa.

If you can order spore or liquid cultre syringes you just need a presure cooker a clean bucket with a lid and some supplies like popcorn, vermiculite from the nursery etc. No gloveboxes required etc.
Kits are way overpiced, I have never paid for a single spore or culture ever, just find friends and swap. You don;t even need jars, I have shown on this forum how to use whiskey tumblers and foil.
