There are many pros and cons on the best way to increase yield and alter the growth rate. I personally have found that topping at the time the plant reaches the 4th set of leaves gives me a desired effect. I best I can say is you are going to have to see what works to create your perfect plant. I still love seeing them grow the way mother nature intended and help it with all the food and minerals to make it healthy. Good Growing

theres not really much good in lsting outside.
A cashcropper I know ties off all of his plants. Not for growth but for security. 5 acres of cannabis is obvious from an aiplane when you've got tall girls, but tie them down and its harder to tell what they are.

Pruning or topping plants redirects their growth hormones. By pruning selectively, you manipulate auxin hormone levels in branch and flower tips. Removing a branch or branch tip causes hormonal balances to shift. Cutting the meristem (top growth tip) of a cannabis plant will diffuse hormones (auxins) and cause greater concentrations in lower branch tips, which will cause lower buds to gain girth and weight.

Always use clean instruments when pruning. A sharp pair of pruners will work best in this case. Sanitize clippers and blades between cuts by dipping in rubbing alcohol. After pruning, the open wound invites diseases and pests. Wash your hands and tools before and after pruning. Make cuts at a 45-degree angle to discourage moisture from sitting on wounds. When you prune during flowering, floral hormones are diffused and flowering is retarded. It takes a month or longer for hormones to build up to pre-pruning concentrations.

Remove spindly branches and growth that is not collecting light energy, including dead and dying leaves. Pruning lower branches concentrates auxins in upper branches, which forces growth upwards. Cut lower branches off cleanly at the stem so no stub is left to rot and attract pests and diseases. If you must harvest a little smoke prematurely, removing a few lower branches will diminish the harvest the least. Pruning out spindly branches and growth inside plants opens up the interior and provides more and better Pruning or topping plants redirects their growth hormones. I say top it, and clone the top. I did this to 4 plants 2 weeks before flowering. They all rooted and are doing great. As for the mothers I topped, they are really bushy, not too tall. and looking fantastic.
I also took branch clones prior to the tops, when the 3rd or 4th set of leaves grow up the main stalk, clip the bottom ones and you've got clones.
Good luck,

I have 2 babies that broke ground the same day, granted they are different strains but at the time I topped the one they both were very close is growth patterns. The topped plant is now cloned and doing very well. These babies are 5 weeks old today and despite the weather being damp and cool their growth rate is going strong. I also, prune the shade leaves of the topped plant to open light up to the inside growth. I usually don't prune these leaves until they show the first signs on droop or if the inside growth starts to become a much lighter green.

thanks everyone for the info. i also need to know about cloning. i cut the top of my plant and stuck it in peat moss i then stuck it in a homemade dome type thing and watered it. the quetion is do u think it will root or do i have to buy rooting hormones?

i doubt it will root. NEVER USE PEAT MOSS, THE PH IS WAY WRONG, AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET LEVELED OUT!!! ph of peat is right at five, and it's a mother to get it up to seven.

you need to go to walmart and get a bottle of rootone. good stuff, and only five dollars. there's no reason not to.

to clone, take your slip, remove growth from a node or two, dip in rooting agent, and place in medium. if in soil, a humidity dome is not needed, though once daily misting can help if your humidity is lower than 50.

its been in it for like a week. its still growing the only problem is there is no roots. is it possible for it to grow new leaves with no roots because mine has new top leaves. also can't i just make a little hydro setup with a fish tank air bubbler. and put it into that or will it mess everything up. i don't really need to know just would like to try with success

you're best bet, imo, is to put it in a bubbler. sounds like your mother plant had been fed heavy doses of nitrogen. that would explain why the slip is vegging, but not rooting.

to get clones to root well, feed the mother with a bloom fert a day before taking slips. p=roots and roots=woots.
