i have ten cfls on two plants and i am one week into flowering. i realized i dont have enough height or enough light for the height. the way the room is i could hang a pole under the lights. running the same way has the lights.(across the top)
i want to take the tops and bend them down on the pole as far as i can and tie them. then drop the light fixture right down on them allowing the cfl to get the tops and the middle of the plants also. Can you do this in flowering? (dont want to top.)and will it mess up the tops?

that should be fine man. just make sure to bend them easily if that makes sense. if your stems are already hard its gunna be a lil harder to do. just make sure they don't snap. start off with a slight bend and gradually bend it more and more over a period of a week or so and everything should work out just fine. how long did you veg for? and how tall are they?

peace

yea just be careful not to break the stem. I'd water, then try to LST the day after watering. And if the stem is quite thick where you want to bend, if you keep pinching it all over for about 10 min, it'll make the stem soft and easy to bend, without breaking. I LST All mine! Pix in sig if interested

my suggestion is to not grow with CFL's unless you absolutely have to. Your bud is probably going to be super fluffy and not as good of quality. Its a lot better idea to just wait and save up money to buy a 400 watt HPS or Metal Hylide for 2 plants. And then you could even run a few of those CFL's so that you get a mixed spectrum of light. im not saying what your doing right now isnt going to work...i just think what i suggested is a lot more efficent and in the end you would be a whole lot more happy with your final product. Next grow op. i would think about that if i was you for sure!!!

oh i am getting an hid for flowering on the next grow but i had to wait til the money was right and i wanted some free smoke. i have 650w of cfls on top of them now and i ve told that it should work good but i know from my friends a hid light is the way to go. im still going to use cfls for veg stage though save on electric bill

start bending asap when the stems are soft and bendable i seen a guy with with paper clips when they were two weeks out of rooting.
i think that i got it where i want it i now have enough room and the lights are right in the middle of the plants i have about 30 (i know there not tops) but tops growing straight up
i think i doubled what i was going to get :weed:

My suggestion would be to learn what you're talking about before you post. Just because you saw some crappy buds grown by a clueless newb under CFLs doesn't mean CFLs are worthless.

Fact of the matter is CFLs produce a better quality of light than HID lamps do, HID lamps produce a greater quantity of light.

Learn how to use a tool correctly before you claim the tool doesn't work. To use CFLs you have to not try to grow monster trees in huge pots. You need to keep the plants compact and close to the bulbs. Training is almost manditory under CFLs.

Also consider, if you're growing with a single HID bulb and it goes out for whatever reason (breaks, shorts, just stops working, etc.) your grow is at an end until you fork out some more cash for a new bulb. Grow with a couple CFLs and lose one, big fucking deal...grow is still on and you've only lost a couple lumens/points of light. And CFLs are available at your local Wal-Mart for super cheap.

Not to mention the fact that (here comes your clue) this is the CFL forum, not the HID forum.

*edit*

And then you could even run a few of those CFL's so that you get a mixed spectrum of light
This is actually a great idea if you can do it (ie. afford it, take care of heat issues, make it stealthy, etc.). I plan to add a small (70-150W) HPS to my flower box at some point. The two bulb types compliment each other very well. For the ultimate (IMO) use a small MH, a small HPS, and several 42W CFLs, some blue and some red spectrum. Many points of light, grow not totally dependant on any one bulb, full spectrum of light, floro light quality, HID canopy penatration...just don't get much better than that IMO.

Sorry for sounding like a dick, just hit on a sore spot. Sometimes "just use a HID!" isn't the answer.

When I tie my plants down, here's what I do:

1. Crush the inner hurd of the stem, a.k.a. "suppercropping". I pinch and work several inches of the stem where I'm going to be bending it. Once the stem is floppy and pliable...

2. Using breadties, I secure the plant to the rim of the pot. Use care not to use too much force, don't want breakage...at the same time, you want to tie it down firmly enough that you're not fucking with it again because you didn't tie it down well enough.

3. Finally I give the girl a good, thourough watering. I grow in 6 inch pots, so it requires a technique. I put the planter into a container big enough to let me submerge it completely. I fill the container and leave the entire pot of soil underwater until all bubbles stop coming to the surface. Then I pull it up and let it drain well.

4. The actual last step is to not play with it again until it's starting to look droopy and in need of watering. It's good to let your plant go through complete wet/dry cycles.

How long did you veg that plant? It looks big for a CFL grow.

I agree with everything Budweaver says, especially that CFL grows are best with training. I start bending when the plant is 4 inches (or so). If you gently bend whenever a branch gets to be 4 inches (including side branches), you will never have a problem with accidental breakage. Plus, your yield will be much better.

Another important fact to remember with CFLs is that the grow cycle (veg through flowering) should be as short as possible. IMO, CFL grows should be around 90 days. That only leaves 30 days for vegging, so the plant (longest branch) will be 12 inches or so when flowing starts.

That's my 2 cents.

well thanks for the info i would of only went 3 to four weeks but i thought i was going to a hid light to flower byut the ass hole backed out on letting me use it.
so they were veging for about 8 weeks from seed though they got about 30inchs then grew 7 inches in first week of flowering. check out my dwc here https://www.rollitup.org/dwc-bubbleponics/278063-d-w-c-new-grow.html

and i will take any more help anyone wants to give look for my video post in the next week or so thankyou.

they look great,But when i flower i use hps for up to 8 plants and it makes a huge diff in return heavier bigger buds, the hood ballast and light bulb for right at 275 and my hood is 25x22 1/2in and has 8in vent holes and i have it at about 8in away with out cooling light and 50,000 lumens @ 1ft is 100,000 lumens @ 6in's and if i put a hot spot bulb guard and cool the light i now i could get with in 3 in's of canopy,if need more info call or go to santee hydro kyle is the owner and let him know what u are lookin for and i can get the price right at what i paid cool, let me now if you want to change light there is time to get it now and finish those baby's right!!!
