Lots of questions

Hi all, I have a few grow under my belt and 1 time experiance with 2 hydro type setups/

1st setup, was brown little sponge cakes and roots hung into water solution and had air sones and airation. Aerpoinic I think

2nd setup was cups in a tray that had a spray bar that floodded each cup every so often30 minutes 3 times a day and the substrate was shultz aquatic soil. ( litle gravel basicly.//)

that was a school project with collards tho.

the cups with gravel was best in my test,,, but anyway

as far as erb, I have 3 grows... 1 a few yrs ago, my first that was a 12 ft tall sativa in a clost with one little as bud under 2 40 wat tubes.

2nd was a few months ago I joined RIU and grew and outdoor and indoor soil ith cfl and did VERY well. and learned a ton.

I hve seed in a bag with bannana peels and soon to be planed, Im tinking hydro instead of soil.

SO If I go hydro I want to use the shulz gravel. and heres the plan
and questions

15-20 100W (23w) CFL ligts hung and spaced evenly in a closet about 4 wide x 3 deep, and height (if I use top half as closet 4ft, move everthing out 9 ft........ I am using bagseed from GOOD herb tha had a few NICE ASS SEEDS, so im not sure of genetics or growth rate, and since I have 2 batches from 2 types. I want o set 1/2 for 1 kind. 1/2 for other. with frames fr light height adjust, DIY carbon scrubber, INternal and thru fan systems. I had wonderful and unexpected ressults with 2700k lighting thruought entire grows including cloning. as I am broke and have VERY little cash, this will need o do anyway, although I wonder if 2700k light was the reason my plants branched and werent tall at all and had REAL light airy buds, good tho. especially for the TINY space I grew in. 1 out door plant had 9 colas LOL

ANYWAY, Im high and babblin, but heres a few questions.
Where are local places not HYDRO stores that hydroponic nutes can be located? harwares stores, or what? HOMEBREW TYPES? Also, how large do I need to get the pots if I am using hydro system like this?, seems like the exposure all the time and all wouldnt require the volme like soil.
I though about using several tray for wall paper that are like 3 ft long, 8 inch deep and 8 wide, I thought 3-5 plants per tray in lines, then the hose runs along it and waters at base of the roots and rock hold mositure well.
I want to top 2 -3 times and get abunch of colas, this seems to work well for me, although it takes longer, it yeilede 9 times as much at the end of the season,.

IF I wen areoponic, what can I use for the rock wool thing?
I dont want to go to the hydro sho,LONG way away, and NO mail order,
so, what about sponge or balled t shirts or somthing?
I have 10 - 50gall tank air pumps and a TON of t's and stones, so aero would be easier,... but hydo with the pump and gravel was more productive with collards, what yalls oppinion.?

I plan on using tupperware continers with the clear parts spraypainted with plastic paint black on the outside so light wont come in, and since its winter now, I like a cold room and heat from the exhaust will blow right under the door outinto my room wich has a fan running 24/7 out the window and the other open so a cross draft is always preset . and I close my heat vents so my room will stay cool and slightly heated by the lighting durring veg . NO odd heat will get given off, and my heat probs will not be a prb to begin with, so AAlot of thing are already at work here for me, and since I used my PC desk cabnet as a grow room for 12 micro clones, i have roome for 1 mamma or 2 to keep close going and an other part of te dest to root them. ALL hidden and my parents, who know about and are ok with it are amazed at ow well and conceled everything was and how they wuldnt have know any different if they haddent seen me carrying bags of dirt in and ferts and the pot smell reekin up my room otherwise untill my carbon filter,

would a small(2-3 gall) bucket of febreeze and water mix with fan be a decent idea or a carbon filter or both, to conceal the febreeze thing hough I had planned it needs to be IN he grow space, since vetilation is incredible, moisture isnt a big deal but I wodered about theCHEMS in the febbreeze in the same room///// remember if you smell it, it is actually small particles of that subtance that smells landing in receptors in your nsal passages, emeber that when you smell shit!.)

@, If the walls in my closet arre already satin white, can I still put up plastic overit(clear) and get the reflectivity of the white paint or should I use this silver mirror plastic film I have? I want to make a good barrier and make an Internal (floor bucket) that EVERYTHING is in, and add alot of silica gell packs behind it to reduce the chance of ruining anthing from mold or moisture or spills, and all messes are containedned in 1 solid plastic bag of sorts in the closet, so floor and walls are protedcted./

Also, whats good time schedules for watering and with what types of setups and substartes.? whare is a good local mass retailer to get ti ers with the ability I need,( time frames, mutiple cylcles and such things as 3 prongs)..
I had A good quickie first setup but realized my flaws and wan to make this grow very successfull and pro like.

I am guesssing I will start 24 plants untill the sex, then yanks males,( bannana/ethelyne gas metod im tring might not have many males, but weel see)

Oh yeah, if I use walpaper trays would having multi plant per continer be ok or would i want to use seperate cups? how big? I wan t to do more smaller faster growing plants and harves more often then have 4 ft plants, I dont have te $ to light that. I alreaddy have collected a bunch of cfls. If I do use the wllaper trays ho they will have the gravel in them, If I go areo onic,I need tupperware with lids to cut oles forthe rockwool that I cant find localy, and dont have abilty to order, so any rockwool replacemanet?

Heh, Just the answer I was looing for, Like going to walmart nd asking, wheres the pharmacy? and getting an answer like,.... where the pharmacys at. I know how to grow soil, NOT hydro. thats why I asked, and I DID search and didnt easily or redily see the info SPECIFICLY pertaining to what I asked, I saw small containers, But I didnt see their size of anyone say what is a smart size. Or what subtstrates are replaceable for those redardedly overprice BS from hydro shops.

I like your idea about the febreeze and water with a fan over it. I may use that if my carbon filter isnt enough!!!

I personally think you should try a flood and drain type hydro system. Very easy to do and reliable.. Also easy to do muliple plants.

As far as watering schedule it all depends on how well the medium retains water. So in a nut shell rockwool wouldnt need to be flooded near as much as clay pebbles or gravel. Advantage of the gravel is that you could water more times a day getting more fresh o2 to the roots.

I would think a disadvantage to the gravel is that it will crumble over time resulting in dust in ur reservoir.. I prefer clay pebbles because you can keep using them over and over as long as you rinse and sterilize between grow. (easy)

I would skip the clear plastic on the walls. The clear plastic will degrage ur light rays.. Plus satin paint cleans very easily with just water. Thats why its satin for washability. FLat paint relfects the most light. You could do mylar but im not a fan. Its terrible for your eyes.

The best advice i can give you is not to over research it. Everyone has their own way of doin things. Everyone has their own secrets aswell. I do lots searching on the web and use that information to suit my particular needs. In other words trial and error will give you all the info you could ever want... Use web as a guide. You wont ever find a "blue print" to growing herb that doenst need some kind of adjusting.

If you look back at old posts here on RIU youll notice even the best growers wont agree on every query..

o yea please dont flower with cfls!!!!!! great for mother and clones but HIDs are the answer to fat buds period.

The gravel just seems like a bad idea. For hydroponics this can go either much better or much worse than soil. Don't deviate from proven methods too much or you will surly be in the 'much worse than soil' category.

flipsidesw has good advice for you, to reiterate
- wall covering are not super important, your white paint is fine.
- do an ebb-flow (flood drain) system
- do not over research it, keep it simple.

Further I would recommend the following
- Use rockwool or coco
- flood 1 time per day just enough to cover the medium
- Just use a grow and a bloom hydro nutrient and H2O2 and nothing else

One option would be to read Al B Fucked's instructions they are sticky big posts. He has a very simple and effective system. People have ashed him almost every question you will ever have.

Oh and one last thing, maybe you would get more replies if you had shorter posts. I had a hard time reading it all.

the GRAVEL I speak of tho is shultz aquatic soil, but its like just chips of clay pots or somthing, I used it for a flood type sytem once before and it worked ok but it was a school project(coll.) that had used collards insead but the pourpos ws to test a sestem I never got to use for what I wanted.

What are some rockwool substitutes? anything local from wallmart or a hardware store, theres hydro shops a little bit from me but they are soooooo expensive and I HATE that town it in. I dont go to the town its in without atleast 1 handgun.

If you go hydro, you can get some peat moss, i've heard a plain sponge works too to sprout the plants in. I use an aerogarden and they come with special little pods for seeds. You can get a package from them at target or walgreens and use those. gl with whatever you choose.

Ok you should use perlite, and follow al b's example. These 2 threads will tell you everything you need to know.

One thing, since you are new to this just copy his hydro setup, you can ignore the stuff about multiple rooms and clones for now. Even ignore the SOG stuff. Try and figure out cloning on your first grow (it takes practice), after that you can do true SOG and get big yield.

check your hardware store garden section for coco coir, that is what I use and it is a good medium. If you decide to use coco coir I can give you some tips. You probobly wont find as good a how to as the all b links. He really has a simple hydro setup that yields execelent.

I have actually cloned 12 from a mother in soil, and 100% lived, flowered and were harvested and smoked! I figure cloning in hydro would be eaiser, but I have only cloned once but will repaet the procedure as I did the firs time, it worked well enoug lol
