Looking to get into breeding.

I have always been really interested in breeding even before I started growing. Problem is I never had a good male I wanted to keep to mix in with the clones I already had. However, recently I helped someone put in an order at the tude and I got a 10 pack of regular master kush seeds from nirvana as a gift for helping my friend put in the order. I have in my garden already some East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD for short) and Ohio's native strain Dumpster. The ECSD and Dumpster are two strains I really love and have always wanted to use them in a breeding project. Now that I have 10 master kush seeds that have all germed I'm thinking of keeping the best male of the master kush to mix with the ECSD and dumpster. The problems I face is that I live in a tiny apartment so space is super limited. I have a small closet i plan to use to keep the male and collect pollen. My question is what method works the best for pollinating only part of a plant? I'm thinking this will be a fun first project to get my toes wet in the breeding pool. Any input on what works best for you guys/girls would be great ! Thanks in advance!

tent your male with paper. then, it will be able to breathe and get light while containing your your pollen. then you can just collect your pollen from inside the tent and freeze some pollen for later, multiple envelopes are a good idea as once you thaw pollen, re-freezing it won't work so hot.

once you get your pollen collected, then you can just use the paint brush technique to target single buds, even using two different males on the same plant, though you could get some stray pollen contamination, especially if you have circulating fans on.

another thing that should help would be pruning your male to keep as many fan leaves as possible and having just a single stalk that takes up the least room and that'd be easier to wrap up for collection.

i learned that it's not a good idea to combine SCROG pruning with open breeding. you won't have enough fan leaves to support making seeds. paintbrush pollinization would leave your gals with more budding energy as well as giving you more sinse.

SOMETHING like this

i can't find a pic using the paper bag technique

you don't want to use non-breathing plastic though. humidity kills pollen as does heat, so you don't want your male directly under a light with it's own miniature greenhouse collecting heat. lighting shouldn't be that critical anyways as you're only trying to make pollen and not go for yield.

the other way to do it is just isolate your male outdoors and collect your pollen that way, or even in another space under flourescents. you could prune your male down to just a few nodes and fit in in a small space. you really only need a few flowers if you're just trying to make a few seeds.

cool keep us posted on what happens.

i REALLY feel an affinity for the plants i've bred. so far, my best one from my first breeding session is "fruity booty" (super cali haze x C99)

it turned out nice and sticky and was every bit as good as most of my jacks, hazes and thais. my sweet haze x (C99 x A11) from this round as well as the jack's cleaner 2 and especially malawi gold crosses should be even better too.

it's a really fun hobby and it's a shame that most growers don't breed for seeds themselves. you never know what surprise traits will reveal themselves. i wasn't expecting my cindy haze cross to be so sticky at all.
