Living soil 20gal pots to 65gal pots

As the title says I have 20gal living soil pots with one season on them. The have the subcool mix with worms and malibu compost with a covercrop. They dried out too quickly for my liking Last year so I want to bump them up to 65gal “soilsaver” pots from grassroots. They are shorter but much wider and I will partially bury them. I’m hoping the shorter wider pot results in a shorter wider plant.

My intention was the reammend the 20’s this year with a buildasoil premix and continue on but now that I want to upgrade i’m considering reamending the pots and then plugging each one into the center of a 65 and putting new supersoil around it. I’d plant in the “old” soil and let it grow into the new stuff.

I’d only be able to fit one 20g as is into each 60 and i’d prefer to leave them intact (old root ball is pretty much broken down) but I was thinking could I break up the extra’s, reammed that soil and use that as some of the filler mixed with the new super soil? I dont see why not.

Anyone done this before? I dont suspect any issues but any pointers would be appreciated

I would try to be gentle with the old root ball and soil, trying not to break up the fungal hyphae network you've got so far.

That was my initial thoughts. Ive done some research and now im kinda leaning toward breaking them up and reammending it all as a mix then reapplying. Reason being is to get an even mix with the reammending nutrients instead of just top dressing and waiting for that to make its way down. Either way some of them would have to be broken down because I could only fit one 20 intact into the center of a 65.

I also need to make a new batch of soil to make up the difference going to 65’s (about 90 gallons). Still wondering if I should use that new soil just as the bottom layer or if I should mix it in with the old reammended soil.

I appreciate your input.
