Lighting question (regarding safety)

I have a lamp I use that is 65watts max written on it. I bought a splitter, and the guy at the store assured me that since the splitter is rated at something like 600watts, I could plug it into the 65watt lamp and run more than a total of 65watts.

Is that true? Is the only issue the socket, and by having a splitter, it's a heavier duty socket?

Is a splitter just a double adapter? From what i think is going on you can do it no problems but i'm a little confused.

It looks like a Y, with a screw socket to put it in a standard lamp, allowing for two bulbs.

I'm actually gonna pick up one of those clamp on shop lights today, that handles 200 watts, and putting two CLFs in it (in addition to the single CLF that I've been running, which is doing a decent job thanks to reflection).
