Light Proof Intake 'How-To' (w/PIX)

Intake: 4" w/ 120mm PC Fan

Supplies:
-Wooden strips (intake diameter depends on how long)
-Nails or screws
-Two-sided adhesive tape
-Bath and Kitchen Caulk
-Flat Black Spray paint
-Plastic 'For Sale' Sign

-Standard 1-sided tape

Looking through the fan into the box



Prep: Paint the color side of the 'For Sale' sign with the spray paint. Be sure to coat a few times to ensure total light leakage.



Frame your area with the wooden strips and the nails/screws. Mine is a 7"(W) x 10" (L). Line the outter most edge of the entire frame with the 2 sided tape and caulk the cracks between he wood.




Expose adhesive backing and attach painted side of the 'For Sale' sign flush against the adhesive backing. If its a corning like mine, make sure that the sign is as close to the corner as possible. Use a razor to cut the excess plastic around the frame.



Cut out a desired area for intake and tape edges.

That seems like it would constrict a lot of airflow. What are the temps before and after? And will you take a pic with the room lights off, with the box lights on?

they got a little warmer but still cool. and i'll try to take a night picture with the room light off soon.

hey man you can never think too much..Ive used your cool tube design twice...and Ive helped other buddies set-up similar tubes...now Im gonna have to jack this awesome lil light proof intake idea you got...

keep on tokin and brainstormin buddy!!

That's wassup! And I'm glad it work'd out for yall. I just updated that Cool Tube thread yesterday with a slight revision just incase people were unable to cut that metal Simpson rod thingy. Check it out! Its a lot simpler in my opinion. And thanks agin for showin luv to my projects homie!

yo im about to blow your mind!!! get that same exact setup but make more layers of that tape so you get more airflow!!!! if you have alot of cfm moving thru it just make it deeper and it should work good!! what you think? was that already mentioned and i missed it?

Dude, as far as the tape.... I use electrical tape to maximize airflow around my fan, the edge of my ducting. That tape and foam weather stripping is my best friend. lol

did you understand what i meant tho? if you make the whole thing deeper it can move more air volume, someone was trying to say it might constrict too much airflow.

yea, to have a bigger air flow capacity and not stress the fan. remember im just saying this cus one guy said it might constrict the airflow. so if you have alot of air going in thru that intake bringing it out a bit might help. it makes sense to me, hope it helps

What about that night pic you promised?

My bad! I just installed a hinged door behind the sliding doors and I'm still trynna figure out a way to block light leakage from where the hinges are. I'll get something up as soon as I get a chance. Been doing my spring cleaning!

Are you guys talking about putting tape between the tips of the fan blade and the fan shroud? That should improve the performance. Think of a Jet Ski, it has an axial fan just like a computer fan. The main differance between a stock aluminum fan blade(impeller) and a High Performance one is this clearance. The better blade is made out of stainless steel, being much stiffer it can be made "bigger", the blades will be a lot closer to the duckting around it. Thus improving vacum. If this is what your doing, I would like to know how you make out.
