I had never had any experience with pulleys either. I can't really get a good picture of the setup in place, its dark up there compared to below the lights. I did do some research, there are two parts of this contraption that you install on the ceiling, the front has two pulleys, one of them is the brake, if you let go of the rope it will stop it. A ceiling or permenant mount pulley casts around $8.00, you would need three. This kit for hanging your bike from you garage ceiling has everything you need, you will have 10' or more of rope left over.
I mounted the permanent ones on a 2x4 the same distance apart as the length of my light fixture. Here is a picture of the front, back and the whole thing. The rope path is hard to show at the ceiling, here is my attempt to show the path it takes. You tie the rope behind the back pulley and then thru your moving pulley ( these are the ones I bought to replace what comes in the kit ), over the back pulley to the first front pulley and then your other moving pulley, back up thru the 'brake pulley and down to the front of your table, there is even a bracket for winding the excess rope. I do have to 'balance' the light, the cord makes it heavier on one end so as I pull the light up I just push one end down and it will balance between the pulleys. VV
