light going thru reservoir

i have a 400w hps over a 6 plant rubbermaid hydro system and i think the light may be shining thru the plastic into the water in the reservoir and to the roots. my question is, will that light affect anything? any effects from the roots getting some dim light? what about the water?

water for certain, roots can turn light brown as well. algae can form with light in water and use oxygen from the water.

Be careful, unless you are using a addetive that turns the roots brown it could be the beginning of root rot. I know little , but a search on 'root rot' could help you out.
Do they feel slimy at all?

Good luck with your grow!!

your reservoir should be opaque! roots do not like light and the water will suffer (algae, etc..) also.

Cover It Asap Tape Mylar To It The 1 With White Backing On It And It Will Do The Same Job And Reflect The Light Making It Useable Also ;) Peace

You may already have root rot if your rez temps have been high.

If your roots are slimy then you need to combat the root rot with some h202 and enzymes.

Then you need to make sure the temp of your rez is 68º or lower,
so the solution will hold enough oxygen to prevent the root rot from returning.

If you cannot get the temp down then you can add more air up to about 72º
after that you will need expensive microbe additives to prevent root rot.

Solution temps above 78º are almost impossible to successfully grow dwc in,
even with the expensive microbes.

Saliniity is a big factor
in how much DO a solution can absorb.

Without high DO you will get disease.

Dissolved Oxygen(DO) is the only way to prevent root rot.
Anaerobic solutions will always become diseased.

If you are using 100% nute loads,
you are diminishing the ability of your solution to hold DO.

The higher your rez temp is,
the more important it is to reduce nute loads.

Check your roots
and if they are slimey
flush out the nutes
and run a hydrogen peroxide solution
for a couple of days.

Then flush that,
and add some emzymes for a couple of days,
to let the enzymes eat the dead roots.

Then leave the enzymes in,
and add your nutes,
at a 50% nute load,
and keep the solution temp lower.

my res is in a place outside wheere the temp in the water stays 60, the roots arent slimy at all, they just kinda turned a tint of dirty white. new roots coming out of my net pots are white as day and i covered the top of the res with black trashbags and the roots went from smooth looking to having notches reaching out into the water all the way down the roots. no algae in the water atm but when the problem started i had the light really low , lower than i should have, and now the light is jacked up to the right height and little to no light is in the res now. and right now i just have 5ml of all 3 parts of the flora series nutrients in a 8.5 gallon reservoir with 6 plants

sounds like progress, still you should get some Hygrozyme, it's a cost effective enzyme product that is always good to have in your res.
