Your build wasn't in jeopardy, you just need to ask Cutter the forward voltage for the 35 watts you want.

How can you use the calculator without knowing the forward voltage at 35w?

The only issue that comes to mind is that 300+ volts DC can kill. I was shocked with 600vdc as a kid, it's not something that one forgets. Ever.
I'm experienced and comfortable working with high voltage, but I would much rather work with safe voltage if it's an option. That's why I do parallel builds with low voltage and suggest a 42v HLG.

2700k 660 red for the options if need be.

On the page there they have the voltages for 500,700,1000 and 1400ma. That's what I was working off of for my calculations, which were 37.5v x 8(strips)=300v
1.05A x 300v=315w
I figure there will be some loss in translation? so even at 90% it works out to 283W which will still give me 35.75w per strip which should be good I figure.

The 480 would cost more and considering I won't need to go over 35w per strip, I don't see it as worthwhile.

I see the 42b does have the variable voltage. So the 7.65 would be split across the 8 strips, giving me 950ma, at 38v(not sure what they correct voltage would be for here) that gives me 36w per strip. If I consider 90% efficiency that would be 32.5 watts.

Is that right?

I agree the lower voltage would be better. But the couple extra hundred on the drivers I don't think I can justify it. Especially if I'm only gonna get 32 watts max.

The 480 is $49 more at mouser.com. The 32 watts max per strip would be with the 320w driver, not the 480w.

I found the strips on the Cutter site, 37.26v at 1A. 37.26V x 1.05A = 40.173 watts/strip with the HLG320 @ 1050ma.

The HLG-320H-42B is 7.65A, divided by 8 strips is .956A per strip. Using the 37.26V number, 37.26V x .956A = 35.629 watts/strip or 282w total. That's actual power to the strips, driver efficiency doesn't affect that. Power draw from the wall would be about 310w due to the 91% efficiency.

Wonder when cutter will be serving those up with the new Cree jb3030c just came out 3.33 ppf and 242 lpw.

Probably why these were on sale. Too bad my timing was off and I didn't do this in a few months when they had switched over. I'm sure these will be good though. I feel like up to 6% more efficiency would translate into up to 6% less hydro to reach the same ppfd. Which would be aaaaaalright. I wonder how much more they would be though.

Technology in especially this area is growing so fast, those strips you bought will definitely get the job done I am a diy builder also and it's always nice to see someone using something other than Samsung diodes completely over rated in my opinion, and with all the counterfeiting going on its the only way to know for sure what you have. I'm testing some of the xpg3 photophyll diodes right now

I think the answer is pretty simple, however I dont want mods all over me, I understand RIU is a business so cant promote such an option here. I will make the observation that these have a Samsung footprint so improves it chances, however given the fascination with even low eff parts like 281B etc, it seems the Samsung name thrown on anything appeals to a market. On paper the new Cree looks a killer part, but will need some grower love for broader adoption

I got it built and it works mint!

I get 667w from the 2x hlg320 on full blast. Which I find odd considering it says it's output is 320. Also I wired in switches for each ballast. When I turn one off, the watt reading drops by 3/4, instead of half. But the output stays the same, visually. Its very odd and I have no idea why.

For what it cost I probably could have bought a top of the line light. So it's not as worth it as it was when I first seen that green gene video but I figure I still broke even. Having the dimmer with a power meter is pretty awesome imo.

I'm recovering from hip surgery so it's been a slow go but eventually I'll get some photos with some flowers under it.
