Life insurance for cannabis users?

About 5 years ago I quit my job with benefits to go into business for myself and in the process got insured on my own with a health savings plan and some life insurance to help my family in case of a tragedy. When you get on a plan like this they usually make you take a blood test, I did and when the insurance company got the results they wanted to charge me, a non tobacco user, the tobacco users rate because, I'm assuming, they found thc in my system. The tobacco users rate wasn't that much more and I could see why they wanted to do this. Well a couple years later I find myself in the same exact scenario purchasing insurance with a different company and paying the smokers rate.Since I have dropped all of those policy's and my wife has gotten a job with U of M and has a good benefit package. When we applied for the life insurance I was denied because I have a history in thier database they said of drug use. After a couple of emails stating I was a mm patient they requested documents and still denied me. I think its pretty funny that with knowledge and facts today the insurance companies will insure a tobacco user with no problem but not a marijuana user. Compare the mortality rates of the two and you will see a large difference, there must be a profit in death.

So, does anyone know who will insure a stoner like me?

I believe there is companies out there that don't do blood testing but usually when you sign up for those companies, you are in for the long haul. I know there is one for sure here in Canada. but they wouldnt insure a big time pot head, ... so depending how much you are using the medecine, you may have to lie and say you only use it a few times of the year, they don't want it to look like an addiction otherwise they won't insure you.

If you smoke enough to fail a test(which many don't even do), you'll simply be rated as a standard smoker. They insure even the heavy tobacco users, rated accordingly. How big the monetary amount of the policy will determine just how much info and or testing they will do. The history of use shouldn't matter too much. A good agent should be able to get this through with relative ease, unless you're looking at a multi million dollar policy.
I worked for an agency in the Detroit area for several years. This agency specialized in higher-risk categories including racing, diving, etc, typically half million and up.
If you continue to experience difficulty getting this figured out let me know and I'll see if I can't help steer you in a direction.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has an open enrollment policy for everyone. Rates are just based on age and sex. You may want to check them out. good luck..

I will contact an agent and see what they can do for me. Thanks for the help.

That's crazy. I'm in the insurance business, granted not in the life and health division, but I've never heard of a blood test for getting insurance. Heck, I've had 2 different policies like the one you mentioned and never had to do a test.....I'd keep looking. That just doesn't sound right at all. Also, they can't deny you based on a pre-existing condition when you go onto your wifes insurance.

From my research the blood test is for HIV. THC metabolites are out of your blood stream in a matter of a few days, even for heavy smokers. What they are far more concerned about is someone getting HIV, then immediately getting life insurance. I shouldn't have to explain any further why they don't want to insure someone with HIV.
