Research is somewhat recently discovering the importance of Terpenes/Terpenoids to the medicinal benefits of Cannabis. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD etc. certainly have their place medicinally, but research is finding that the Terpenoids combined with Cannabinoids is of much greater significance to the efficacy of a given strain of Cannabis. It may be hard to believe, but High Times actually published a really nice article on the subject in the newest issue.

...so my statement/question to start off this thread is this....

Solvents used to create BHO destroys Terpenes (highly volitile compared to cannabinoids), therefore much of the medicinal qualities are destroyed, if grain alcohol is used to make a tincture, and the Cannabinoids and Terps are left in suspension (not boiled off), are the Terps still intact?

Also, wouldn't ice and be of far superior quality compared to solvent extractions?....i know the answer.....but wouldn't most people prefer medicine that is highly aromatic with much of the Terps intact?....it all seems like a no-brainer to me....I have always struggled with this fascination with solvent extractions, and how so many folks are so geeked on it.......

From my experience as long as you don't HEAT PURGE the concentrate over about 125 degrees f. The smell and flavor remain.

Not gonna lie tho buddy. Really leaning toward dry ice extraction and edibles. That wax shit is IFFY.

I got the terp love!! The expression and profiles released from a proper ice/water extraction are the most healing I have made or come across!! Jah bless!

In the case of CO2 extraction, the carbon dioxide is the solvent. It's a supercritical fluid extraction just like with butane.

U should discuss this with Matt Rize he's extremely knowledgeable about this subject.

As far as I know it butane doesnt destroy the terpenes.
Its the process of the solvent extractions.
Your desolving the waxy membrane that protects the terpenes and cannabinoids.exposing them to the elements.
And terpenes evaporate at pretty low temps. So as your purging there goes the terps. You add heat and there goes more.

I dont see it any different in a co2 extraction .

I would rather have residual co2 in my oil then butane though thats forsure.

I may be wronge but thats just how I see it.

Super simple, just made a batch. Not bad, almost to shatter consistency now. Sitting on a heat mat set low (on parchment) waiting it out. Probably take it off tonight and let it cool.

I've only ever used iso for my honey oil, I've tried all sorts of BHO and could always taste the butane. I cook the iso off very slow so it doesn't bubble/boil it takes longer but taste way better and the longer you leave it the thicker it gets and less you get but it does turn to shatter. Just my little input

I'm also very interested in the terpene discussion I've been reading a little about it and terpenes even have an effect on the type of high you get and the medical values, the more you read on the different aspects of cannabis the more amazing the plant we all love seems now if we could just get the rest of the world to realize the benefits of cannabis we'd be good

i think as far as terpene preservation is concerned, a heat mat is about the most heat that could be used to keep the terps from escaping.......

Ccoastal is getting great quality and pretty damned good yields to boot. The terpene profile is better than BHO imo, but... still doesn't beat ice water.

I alway put a pot of water on my hot plate then my iso in the water that way its less direct heat I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I've always done it this way and it works great if your not in a hurry

Ive been entertaining the thought of winterizing icewax like people do bho to get rid of the waxes. It should leave you with almost pure turpenes and cannabinoids.;-)

Easier done w/ dry sift or dry ice kief. Why ruin perfectly good bubble?

I like to use oil in a vape pen in concerts and stuff. People just think its a ecig lol

And I dont want any chlorophyll in it at all. That pretty hard from kief.
