I just made an order for some new genetics and want to begin keep mothers in order to keep the line of genetics. I grow in DWC and have been cutting clones just before the girls go into flower this has been working but i do not have enough space to run all the different strains i have at once.(i will have 5 differinent strains when the new seeds come in). I was hoping to get people to post their mother techniques/pics i have searched quite a bit without finding a lot of info.
I was thinking of hempi buckets or any soiless mix, i want to stay away from pumps and things that make noise as planning on putting in my bedroom closet and i dont want to step on the ladies toes with the noise.
thanks in adavance

I keep no mothers and some of the most legendary breeders do the same . I always maintain my plants that I keep in the best of health and just before flowering I take and clone new upper growth for my next round with them ..

I know some will disagree with this method but I have perpetually grown the same strains for years and years with no degradation or genetic drift while eliminating the need to have mother plants ..

does that mean the new clone is always from the single top of the previous clone which if you follow the chain all the way back is also from the original single top from the plant grown from seed?

Thats the method I started using. How consistent are the new clones through the generations?

Your momma is so fat she doesn't wear BVDs, she wears Boulevards.

Oh, wait, my bad. Mother plants.
Sorry. Carry on.

Nope just newer growth and it does not matter , I just prefer to have a lush healthy green cut verses something from the lower end of the plant . I mentioned no genetic drifts and this means its as consistent as possible .. The drift I believe is a false rumor same as loss of potency .. Yes vigor is lost within a few years at max but this plays well into my perpetual garden based on elite clones and then seeds that become select choice ..

Lets take Blue Dream and Pre98 Bubba Kush for example , I have them both and have had them for a long time but before me they were cut hundreds of times and passed on possibly in the thousands now .. I dont think everyone in this continuing circle have held mother plants , in fact 90 % of them have not from my experience .. With this said I have never found these same cuts to differ once adjusted to my environment when obtained from different sources ..

I often send my clone only girls to a friends house for a long term slumber party so to say , I only trust a select few to hold them and they are highly experienced long term growers .. I never have had a question of doubt about any of this in general ..

And just another point , often these clone only phenos become worldwide like the web itself .. Kick ass it is that we are able to allow our plants to grow and grow while being shared with the next grower in line ..Even if they are overseas ..

That is what I currently do, but with my set up i can only run 1 or 2 different kinds, and now i am going to keep 5 different kinds, and the cycle doesn't work without more space,

I've seen high times interview supposed "pro growers" so many times that said, clones had genetic drift. And that taking clones from clones consistantly, rather then keeping mothers. Was a for sure way to degrade potency and qaulity of the cut.

Of course That's not true at all.

Makes me wonder if High Times doesn't just make stories and interviews up when they feel like it.

I've never kept mothers, I'll clone off the top, or from a smaller under branch.

Theoretically, once you find any females you want to keep. You should be able to go 1 for 1 on any amount of strains you want.

You need one flowering, and one in veg. So if you want to keep 5 strains, you would need 10 plants at a minimum going all the time.

I've been thinking to try and make some multi strain grafted bonsai mothers. Mainly just for fun, but also because I have a few cuts only one other person has, and some males only I keep.

Matching potential partners is taking some time, but I've got a few picked out, and as soon as I have space I'll be trying for a 3 strain mother bonsai.

Its all about the real deal bonsai pots for keeping these ladies small and manageable.
