Ok so lets say i had plans on becoming a caretaker, what would be a good route to take? Should i advertise (doesnt seem like a good idea lol) on a site tho im not sure that follows inside the rules, or should i move to a legal state and try dispenseries. I just know im not trying to go an illegal route, maybe go out with someone that can aquire their license first? Opinions?

That a bit far, i was thinking about RI. Was thinking i could get my girl her card cause she has medical papers for back injurys, ill just have her say its persistant. I see RI. laws are pretty tight so i doubt ill be able to pull off a headache as a reason for a card. Saw it as being either a caretaker for her or a caretaker for others as the easiest route to go. Only trouble im seeing is the lack of lists for needed caretakers. Anyone from RI need one? lol

Buddy of mine in Colorado says there up and running you have to get license and the despincerys are buying peoples caregiver licenses to be able to legally grow mor crop(2 in veg 2 in flower per person) Not 100% because its from a buddy not I have not seen the law so its hearsay

I live right next door and have a friend who is a MMJ patient. His condition is quite severe though. I think your problem lies in the available dispenseries. You'll be able to get the card but it sounds like you want to grow for meds and money... Look up medical marijauna dispenseries RI.

Well i was more looking at it as a second job, doing something i could enjoy- helping a needy patient- and paying for itself as a hobby. LOL no no yacht's in my future just never ending bills. RI is close, not jam packed with dispensery employees that can barely complete a full sentence, and i figured it would be high in demand as its still somewhat a fresh idea. If it comes down to having to bang it all out of the street its not happening hehe. Are you suggesting i look for employment AT a dispensery or FOR a dispensery?

Both......If your an experienced grower and have a little small buisiness knowledge I can't see why you couldn't at least apply to be the "Dispensery" Theres state guidlines for this and at this time the governor absolutely hates the idea of dispenseries. If I were in your shoes I'd look into Vermont. There aren't a hell of a lot of dispenseries but at least the state is a bit more liberal and I could see them poppin up like Wild Fire. Maine too.....You've got options brother

Not an experienced MJ grower but ive had good luck for a few years now growing vegetables and herbs. I did all my research on how to grow those on sites like this lol, cause there was just an abundance of info where growing vegetables i didnt find much that didnt want me to buy a book. But back to my main question, ok i move state.....now what lol. Im not trying to move and run the risk at not finding a job in either field and being stuck. Was just trying to do it as a hobby, hobbys arent cheap now a days so i figured a self supporting one would be good, plus i had a ball growing vegetables these past few years. I mean i guess i could try and find one of those mass script writting doctors and get my license but i dont use it, havent in about 11 years. Plus RI has good fishing so thats a big perk in my book haha.

But i mean has anyone dealt with this situation in the past, my research hasnt turned up much and i dont know of anyone that needs a care giver. Is it legal to sell to a dispensery or is that one of those hush hush kinda deals, not trying to get bumped by a hobby nor deal in any shady situations. I mean if im trying for a pipe dream by all means lemme know lol. I have heard that consuming MJ can help with the anxiety of quitting cigarettes so who knows maybe thatll be the kick. And did i post this in the right section or am i in the wrong section?

You should find a dispesery wherever is closest to you and have a heart to heart with the owner. I would prefice it by saying your not trying to compete with him in any way. This is my plan with another friend....I really enjoy the plant in all aspects.. You say that you haven't smoked in 11 years....Woooow. I can't wait till the work day is out to rip a bong. Is this by choice?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread.. As far as employment, make a call to the desired states chamber of commerce..They will provide you with socio economic information.. Follow your gut...Every now and than risk is a viable option.

Lol yea by choice, I used to burn AS an excuse not to do anything lol. I get all paranoid now its weird. But i have had baked goods and that was one hell of a relaxer, got rid of my headache to boot. But in no way can i afford to buy it for this purpose, if i grew it for me it would probably be ONE plant for like months worth haha. But if i could help out someone more in need that would be a great deal. Guess maybe i should try and get my licence before i move, or get the doctors note before anyways. I was just nervous that if i got a doctors note and then moved i wouldnt get approved lol

You need a good indica variety for relaxation and pain relief......I got a better idea of what your trying to do. Keep in mind; I believe you have to be a resident of the desired state as well as have a Dr approval within that state.....Good luck man it takes alotta balls to even consider what you want to do. Be safe......

Chalkie,

First, you will have to relocate and live in that state, you or your girlfriend will not be able to go to RI or any other state, obtain a card and move back to whereever and start a grow operation.

You also seem to think as a caregiver your going to make big $$$, you may or may not depending on the state. Forget Maine as an option. I have been involved with the Task Force meetings to establish the regulations for caregivers and dispebsaries. Caregivers can have 5 patients, dispensaries you will not get into. The restrictions coming out in the very near future may surprise many patients, would be caregivers and potential dispensary owners in Maine.

We are expecting to adopt legislation like New Mexico, a very limited number of initial dispensaries, 1-3 tops. There is a $5,000 license fee, you have to be a registered non-profit orginization, and you will have to do all of this in the next 45 days, not possible.

The state is going to modify the law to pull patients away from caregivers and they are looking at having the Department of Agriculture handling the growing. It hasn't been decided yet, I met with the Task Force on Jan 5th, but they may adopt a position where the state grows the nursery stock to maintain oversight and then sell the nursery stock to patients, caregivers, and dispensaries. They are also considering that the Department of Agriculure will grow everything from start to finish and provide that to registered patients, caregivers, and dispensaries for a fee.

All registered and unregistered patients, caregivers, and dispensaries would be required to buy the nursery stock from the state. They are looking at setting price controls the same way they control alcohol here. Price controls mean that would be caregivers have to compete with the state authorized dispensaries yet are severly restricted in the number of strains they can provide to patients because of plant number requirements (6 per patient).

The state Department of Agriculture would afix seals to all plants sold which will expire 120 days after sale. This means that anyone growing from their own stock would be deemed illegal. This also means that if everyone has the same genetics, patients will move to dispensaries because of selection. They are looking to make it financially not profitable for caregivers or patients to grow. They are considering a price of $80-100 and ounce at dispensaries which means a lot of profit is gone for would be caregivers and they would have to compete at that price point or patients will go to the dispensaries simply because of better selection, all other things being equal.

You will also have to pay for each plant purchased and that may be as much as $30 a plant. You see where this is going? Regulation and oversight.

Several people on the Task Force are going to force regulation on this industry in Maine that you have not seen in any other state. I am a patient, I am a caregiver, I am co-founder of a non-profit that has a package waiting, it's taken well over 6 months of dedicated effort and in the end it may be for nothing.

My advice is to find a good part time job, get your girlfriend a card so you can be her caregiver and grow for her. Maybe you can pickup a few patients along the way and make a buck or two but Maine is going to shock a lot of folks, especially patients that are "unregistered" under the old law. They would remain legal under the old law however under the new proposed changes they would be required to purchase from the state facility, show proof everytime they purchase unless they are on the state registry. They are trying to eliminate patients that obtained a doctors recomendation six or seven years ago and have never had it updated. This will force them to register and get updated paperwork. If they grow without state supplied nursery stock they will be prosecuted.

There is a backlash right now when you talk to other dispensary owners because of the loose regulation surrounding this, overall it's not good for the industry and for the ultimate goal of most smokers. Even in California individual towns are looking for way to shutdown operations, not good. The problem is everyone see's a flood of dispensaries as a logical step to legalization which it is not. The more they push to play fast and loose the more people become unaccepting. The clear path to legalization is a steady approach of public acceptance; medical use first, greater state oversight, price controls, better public acceptance, state established facilities much like liquor stores.

I totally support legalization, but that will never happen without the government getting their share, won't happen. Small baby steps are needed.

If your hell bent on getting into the business take the advice of a few people here, move to the West coast. I know this is not the news everyone wants to hear about Maine, but it is the reality.

Thank you for that information, but in no way was i considering moving to Maine thats for sure lol. I wouldnt move to Maine if they GAVE me a house.I wouldnt plan on moving to RI to get a license to just move right back, that wouldnt even make sense. But on another note (i thought i mentioned this in a previous post but not sure), I in no way intend on making huge $$. Just looking for a hobby to pay for itself, and ive heard it can be used to lighten the load of quitting cigarettes, $100 an ounce would even suffice. Part time jobs are out of the question lol, I dont have the availability to work part time, full time only for me lol. As far as where to move, Id really like RI for the fishing lol, not the legalization. Its also close to family, so if it didnt work out i could easily relocate back to the state.

When you say the state will eventually take over the money i can definetly see that coming, in no way would they let all that taxable money disappear. But just like with alcohol, they wont get the whole market. For years alcohol was a hobby for me aswell, and i always had a customer to purchase it. I dont think opening up a dispensary on every block is the answer tho, like you said they're just pushing on thin ice blindly not careing. But yea imo a few extra bucks, just like with any other growing or crafting hobby, and helping out another seems like a win win for me. Id move to Cali but a hobby just isnt worth bumping into a dispensary every third step, maybe i can find a county to match my needs--- sure as hell have more fish to go after lol.

But a few posts written and a bunch of research and i still dont understand how a co-op or dispenseries work as far as legaly working with them. No clue how to find patients to work for, guess ima just have to move and go searching lol.
