I only use HID lights. Fluoros for starting new plants tho.
If you are just starting off then LEDs would be the way to go. Higher initial cost but savings in the long run due to lower power needs and less cooling concerns. A/C is pretty expensive to run.
In my case I grow in a very cool basement/crawl space so I actually need the extra heat given off by my lights or would have to run a heater to keep temps up so I wouldn't realize any savings from using the more efficient LEDs. Only for 3 months of the year does it even get up to around 65F down there and all the air that goes into my grow space comes from the outer basement and is exhausted outside. Built in A/C.
Lots of good info in the LED threads about building your own setups for COB LEDs or which are the better pre-made units.
