I'm just about to start my first indoor setup, I'm wondering if LED is better than FLUORESCENT as LED seems a lot cheaper to buy and to run,,,,,
im confused also about this HPS and MH ?? Does that apply to LED? And what is the difference between them?

ANY info would be greatly appreciated!!
thanks,

LED isn't actually cheaper than Fluorescent yet when you're looking at Watts (which is what's important in terms of how much the plant will get out of the light)
LED $140 90W http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WFW7KO/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Fluorescent 125W $53 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UV6P9I/ref=oh_details_o09_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm not a whole lot more knowledgeable than that, but I know LED emits a lot less heat and can potentially use less power with similar results. Here is another website with some information http://11il.com/best-lighting-indoor-cannabis-growing/

And MH is a Metal-Halide Lamp which produces more heat but is cheaper from what I've seen.
HPS is High Pressure Sodium Lamp, which is similar to the Metal Halide.
Neither apply to LED or Fluorescent.

Both of these are older and from what I know kinda being pushed out by LEDs. If you're looking at the 14-15W LED you should just stop right now and save your money. Those are junk and will give you VERY SLOW growth. You'll want to save up a little more and get one of the two I posted above. Those will be good for 1-4 plants at young age and 1-2 full grown I believe.

Here's my take thus far. If you are going only white, go fluorescent. LED is not efficient enough to overcome the initial price, unless you go Cree. Even with Cree, it is a toss up. LEDs only matter when you start using blues and reds.

This LED thing has me so confused and after all that I've read I think my next grow I want to go with LED's. I've been looking at 2 different lights, both have been mentioned here in the forums and I was wondering which one would work better for me. I'm only growing 2 plants at a time and my box dimensions are about 2 foot by about a foot and a half. I grow for personal smoke so my budget really isn't all that great.

The first one I'm looking at is the UFO - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WFW7KO/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The second one I'm looking at is from HTG Supply - http://www.htgsupply.com/Product-7-Band-180w-LED-Grow-Light.asp

I don't need overkill in my little closet grow, I just need something simple and easy to use. Thoughts ? Opinions ?

I've only used one LED but i can testify through the 3 years since i've been using it, it has worked VERY well for personal grows. 135w blackstar UFO. Anyone that says its not efficient has not really used LEDs much. They are highly efficient, and cost effective. The initial cost is what throws most people off. But when you take into account that you don't need a ballast, you don't need high airflow ventilation, or have to contend with high temps or have to worry about really any addition to your current light bill (20-30 a month tops). You have a 30,000+ hour lifespan as well, so you get at least a few years of use out of them. Look at my sig and you can see an example of a plant under this LED in a 2x2 space at less than 30 days veg.

Thanks Hank, that has got to be the best answer I have gotten from all the places I have looked. I'm at Amazon now and found the 135 watt blackstar UFo and before I add it to my cart would you mind taking a quick look and telling me if this is the right one to use ? This is my first grow and I started with aluminum foil as my reflector, and then ripped all that out and painted the inside white. I'm using a rubbermaid cabinet and it's definitely not light proof by any means. My next thought is to maybe line the box with white foamboard with maybe a black piece of posterboard on the back side to try and retain as much light inside the box as possible. Is that good idea or ? I've spent a few hundred so far between the box, the things inside and trying to constantly improve on it. I started out with bubbleponics but soon learned it's alot of work. I think my next grow will be a soil grow.

I also know I need to be able to adjust the light up and down and that is one of the faults with my current setup. Should I get a rope ratchet as well ?
