Ouch, the new member got blazed by Fran, but...Fran is right. I've spent many hundreds...ok a few thousand dollars on lights and the lower priced chinese LED's have never performed as well,. By reading this thread I LEARNED and purchased Rapid LED and A51 and they have performed adequately, I still miss the HPS, but in SoCal, electric costs will eat your wallet.

I would never spend any money on a light source with a 3000-5000 hr service life, especially for $1700. I wonder why all these new MH plasma companies are shying away from luxim modules??? price??? bad spd???IDK , it's weird why you wouldn't rather have a 30'000hr light engine instead.

to be fair I did spend money on some zoomed florasun bulbs(t5) which probably have less than a 5000hr life...........never again though, fuck that:P
Good catch PSUAGRO.

I looked into the bulb lifespan thing. Luxim recommends replacement after 70% degradation while iunu recommends replacement at 3-4% degradation. This explains the massive difference in service life. Here's the catch, last time I checked you had to send you luxim fixture back to the manufacture to get a bulb replacement while iunu bulb replacement is DIY. Iunu's bulb is also supposed to have more red. Some would say that this means that iunu is just trying to get people to repurchase bulbs more often, others would say that you'd be crazy to let your bulb degrade to 70% when your growing a crop that sells for so much. I'd let my bulb degrade to 70%.... if I was growing lettuce.

Anyhoo it looks like strike 2 for the Vero unless Toshiba, (who make the COBs for Bridgelux) has made some deal to sell their tech with the new Bridgelux, aka China Electronics Company, it doesn't look good for those folks who've cut their heatsinks for 29s :(. Or at least the Vero we know and love today is going bye-bye.

In 2013, Toshiba planned to expand investment in LED production, but yield rates for LED chips based on GaN-on-silicon have been significantly lower than those using sapphire wafers, the sources indicated. Thus, costs for producing LED chips based on GaN-on-silicon are relatively high and this is possibly the reason Toshiba plans to stop producing white-light LED chips, the sources said.

big difference between miscommunication and out right lying @oliggtower clones don't "break surface" anyways i remember another shotty journal somewhere with these lights presented in a similar matter. .. walking a fine line

Im looking for the cheapest LED possible and from the reading ive done anything from a 300w or 400w full spectrum light would work. Any recomendations or anything of the sort?

What's your budget? You want to look into a cob led light that uses cree cobs or bridgelux vero.

Cheapest? DIY with Veros. Most efficient as of date? CXB3590 cobs. For safety reasons I decided against a full-on DIY (not so confident with AC) and just bought Optic Lighting kits. There are a couple on the market that are similar/close to each other in price/performance - GoGreenLEDs, Pacific Lighting Concepts, A51, and couple of really new lights that are being tested by members here on RIU which will debut soon (keep your eyes peeled).

Better to start off with a budget. If you can spare ~$500-600 you'll be able to get some reliable and proven lights.
