Learn with me: The blind leading the blind

I am new to this site and also new to marijuana cultivation, but I have a strong desire to learn and some extra cash and a burning desire to smoke some good herb for a change.

I will be documenting everything, in vast detail in the coming weeks. As of now, I just purchased my lights. I bought a 400w HPS reflector and ballast. I am going to be using a GE Lucalox HPS grow bulb.

I am going to be building a tent setup, and for now I am just going to use the seeds that I have on hand, so I will have no idea what strain of plant I am growing.

I will be using soil, instead of a hydro or bubbleponics system.

This will be an ongoing and slow process, but if you are a newb and you wish to learn along with me, feel free to ask questions, just dont expect too many answers just yet.

I am new to this site...just by luck I found it when looking for info on Organicide...I wonder if it is too hot to grow outside here in this climate... 93 degrees daytime, low 80s at night...Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got a bit impatient and started some seeds germinating.

My light is still not in yet, but I decided that I would use this time to experiment and learn some things.

I bought a clamp reflector from Lowes and and some CFL's. I want to see if its possible to keep some sprouts going, while I wait on my new light. Im using two 100 watt equivalent bulbs.

I bought a cheap digital thermometer\humidity meter from Wal Mart for about 7 bucks.

I also bought a soil test kit from Lowes for around 12 bucks and a ph test kit for around 7 bucks.

I am using Miracle Gro soil control potting mix. I also bought some perlite, although the soil already contains it I figured a little more wouldnt hurt. The soil is rich in Nitrogen and the ph seems to be within the proper levels. I will test again before my next watering.

I started germinating some seeds on 10/7/09. I used a folded papers towel on a plate, moistened it and covered it with bowl. I put the bowl in a cabinet away from any light.

10/9/09 I had two seeds sprouting and a few more had cracked. I planted the two sprouts immediately in 16 oz. cups and watered them with water that was adjusted to a ph of 6.5 aprrox.

I have city water which is alkaline but I adjusted the ph level down with vinegar. It worked like a charm. I dont use precise measurements, I just experiment.

10/11/09

When I awoke this morning I was still staring at four cups of moistened soil.

When I arrived back home at around 5 pm, a tiny sprout had appeared in one of my first plantings.

Pot grows even in Afghanistan where the temps can and frequently do get over 100 degrees. This is the extent of my knowledge however, considering that it does not pertain to my specific needs and is therefore useless to me.

In the future though, if you have questions, start your own thread or send a PM please.

the kid can ask questions in this thread... don't be so overprotective...

someone can ask a question that might end up helping you at some point...

and just to throw it out there you need to control the temps, even a 250 watt hps gets hot...

:P

I was under the impression that this was my thread! Silly me.

His question was submitted at random and had nothing to do with the topic at hand. I handled it respectfully in my opinion and even asked nicely that he send me a PM for any further questions. Im unsure why you took affront to this.

....but

The heat and ventilation are currently my biggest concerns, though I have not given it too much thought considering I have not received my light. I have no idea what temps Im going to be dealing with just yet and cold weather is moving in fast, so vigilant monitoring will be required regardless.
