Leaf curl and burn .

Thanks for dropping by.. I hate to have to post photos and ask but I guess everyone is a newbie at some stage!

This is a second time grow I will try to be thorough. The first grow was discarded after 1 week, suffering badly from the same apparent issue.. After hours of looking online I am still unsure as to what exactly is going wrong but some thing I have done this time was better than the last.

The Issue:

I am starting to see slight yellowing, small dark brown/grey spots appearing on leaves (magnesium?), slightly wilting larger leaves (overwater/bad drainage?) I have uploaded a single HQ photo for ease of viewing.

The Set Up:

25L organic potting mix no nutes
5L perlite

2x white widow x skunk

2x barneys farm critical x kush

The first time i watered every morning with distilled /pure water... the water PH was around 7 the plants died quickly after.
This time i have been watering every morning with tap water. it has a higher PH of 9 or 10. Run off closer to 7 (I'm guessing due to the initial soil PH?)
I only water until its full and not pissing water out the bottom of the cup.
I have added a small amount of sulphur to the mixture in hope to bring the PH down gradually..

My temporary set up is providing more than adequate light (4x 24 watt CFL at 6500K) And the temperature is 22-29*C / 71-85*F humidity 40-50%... everything has been running 24/7 light and fan to keep air circulation and promote a strong stem..

I did mix up a quarter dose of both powerfeed and seasol and feed a couple of days ago, maybe that's what has kept the plant alive longer than the first round, not so sure though.

I'm aware that to properly feed the plant an ec reading will need to be taken . what is the best way to do that at this stage? The plants are still so tiny , about an inch tall.

Really looking forward to some friendly advice :)

stop watering them every day. They're small and don't need all of that. You're over-watering them.

Thank you for the feedback :) There has been an inch of dry soil each morning.. maybe i will leave it two days between watering and see how they react

Plants look fine. Soil looks soggy. Let them dry a bit before you water. Top inch will be dry when ready to water in plastic pots; maybe 10% moisture. No nutes until the plant starts stacking nodes or shows a deficiency in an adequate, fulfilling environment. :peace:

Still held off water, no major signs of any thing going down hill.. just these small brown spots I'm not sure about... it's definitely not getting burned from heat, could it be too much light?? I have 6000lm of CFL light 2 inches above.. should I half this? I read the minimum should be around 3000lm per square foot so assumed that going over wasn't too bad. Have also attached a photo of my temporary set up.

haha yeah i didn't think it would be rocket science .. tried not to give too much attention but the soil PH is close to 10 and the water PH here is also pretty high so that could be an issue. Going to try a batch with better soil and water and yeh as u said just trial and error I guess is the best way to do it! :eyesmoke:

Hey dude-

I really like the simplicity of your crow and how tidy and clean your wiring is. You've done well!! The idea of having the lamp shade over those CFL'S is super nifty and something that I've been trying to figure out meself for a while now...

I've had similar issues a few times with small experiments outdoors on window sills etc... At first I used to closely examine my baby's as much as possible (every time it came to mind) but from my experience with baby's they are happier to be left alone than played with. As a newbie and don't get me wrong I am a newbie too I would defiantly recommend not adding anything to try and fix problems with out some experience before hand. This is because with such small environments (cup grows) even the smallest amount of anything will completely off-set the bio-chemistry of the plant and will be in turn more detrimental than the problem it-self.

In more recent times SWIM has taken on the ideology that less is more in fact SWIM leaves his outdoor's girl (5-6 weeks old) for a week at a time with out a single check. This is mainly of the complexity of getting to the bastard lol. although this isn't recommended and SWIM should make more of an effort to water regularly and maintain. This "bastard" is proving to be the most successful one to date. :)

Keep trying boss. Personally I don't see any problems at the moment except for over watering but that seems to have been taken care of.

Take it easy and most importantly... Stay high
