My "night" temps have been too low. Some of the plants seem okay with it, some not so much. They also seem a bit more hungry this week. I fed 1/2 strength again, but I'll be bumping it up next week for sure. Growth was good this week, but starting to see a lot of yellow and purple. I've checked the soil ph and it's at 6.7 so it's fine.

Either the Fox Farms lineup of nutrients really sucks or like I said the low temps killed me. This week was particularly cold and I don't use a heater in my grow. My "night" is during the day, but starts at 7:00am and it's been about 45 degrees in the morning. I've been shutting the ventilation off the best that I can when it's cold in the am, but not much else I can do about it.

The plants are at about day 35 so they have a ways to go so hopefully they can stay healthy enough to the end to produce some fat nugs. So far growth seems good, although not as fantastic as this same strain was in hydro.

I think next grow will be the return to hydro. This soil, dirtfarmer shit has been fun, but I'm over it. I can make it work, but I just don't enjoy it nearly as much as I enjoy hydro. Keeping the soil happy and the plants happy feels more like voodoo than science.

Unbelievable....I opened up the tent last night to start inspection.......I spot a nanner. So of course it's out with all the plants for further inspection...more nanners. It seems to only be on one of my plants, but DAMNIT. So now I'm sentenced to 3-4 weeks of daily inspections and trying to irradicate them. I am at a loss right now about it. I don't believe in culling them anymore because I did that in an earlier grow and then lots of them hermied and I ended up with seeded bud and all that culling the early one(s) did was dimish my yield. I did spot some early developing seed pods so I know at least one opened up at one point, but it doesn't seem widespread yet.

I have double checked the light seal in my grow room and it's sealed. The room that the tent is sitting in is even kept dark during the "night" hours and I know the schedule hasn't been disturbed.

Fortunately I don't sell my bud so it is of no REAL consequence as seeds don't bother me that much. I just pick them out and smoke my bud. I'll fight the good fight and try to keep it as unseedy as possible. Now of course I don't know what strain to go with next. White Rhino I grew from regular seeds in this setup and didn't have any hermie problems, I was just sad to only get 4 females. I feel like these last few years I've been gettin' shit on by the weed God's.

so, from what i hear, most breeders use coloidal silver method, then breed back to a non stressed regular female to reduce the hermaphrodite tendency, however, the trait can still be carried over. would you say this is most likely a hermie trait from a femenized seed? and the plan of action is to prune the nanners as you see 'em and finish out the grow?

That's what I believe to be the problem here.

The problem really is that I don't have a seperate veg area. If I did I would have taken clones and I'd be killing all clones from the hermied plants. I'd only keep clones from the best pheno and I wouldn't have to worry about this in the future, but I've been reluctant to add the veg tent. I used to have the seperate space and it was great, but I need to go back to that. Dealing with starting all over from seed every time is annoying.

Damn laser, sorry to hear about the nanners. I commend your efforts to salvage whatever you can by inspecting closely and plucking any boy parts. Best of luck friend!

So I think I know what is going on. I've made a mistake.

I noticed that 2 more plants had nanners. I've marked the plants that have had nanner spotted on them so that I can find them quickly to search them everyday. The others will be searched about twice a week. I noticed that the now 3 with nanners were in the center of the tent.

I thought, that's fuckin weird. Can't be a coincidence. So I took the light out and fired it up in my garage hanging from the rafters and holy shit.....I built a laserbeam. I am kickin' myself for even making this mistake. I am using an old light hood that I originally purchased for my 400w light. lol. I upgraded lamp and ballast somewhere down the road and then upgraded again to 1000w. When I put the bulb in, I thought real briefly "This hood sure is small for this lamp, need to replace this thing when I get some scratch". I didn't REALLY think about what was probably going to happen if I didn't. I just thought it was going to be pretty inefficient.

Well, I have a 2'x2' laserbeam in my grow...I should have taken a picture to show how ridiculous it is. I kicked it back down to 600w, moved the plants that were in the beam to the outsides and in just the last 36 hours the growth has been really good.

Live and learn. Now when someone asks if they can use their old small light hood with a new lamp and ballast, I'll have some experience to share.

aw man, that's awful, your babies got laserburned!! haha at least you identified the problem. if you don't mind, post a pic of the setup you had going. how many more weeks do you estimate before they're ready? 3?

It's kind of funny when you point out that they got "laserburned". I'll post a pic tonight when the lights come back on. I'm currently searching for new hood, new tent (need to go to a seperate veg space as much as I'd like to avoid it), new trays and reservoirs...oh that's right, we're going back to hydro next grow.

2-3 large bags of hydroton and a couple of trashcans to help me store/clean them and a lot of water to flush them through.

Next year I'm definitely going to use a seperate veg area and try to get 3 harvests instead of 2. I'll also try to use LED's over the summer for vegging and perhaps for flowering, they are just so damned expensive still.

hell yeah. starting from seed every time is rough. for sure, i'd like to see you set up and knock out both a hydro and led grow too!

Yeah, doing more reasearch on LED's I just don't think that I am there yet. The cost is still too high and I can't help but to feel like in 2 years, they'll be 25% of what they are now. All I hear about is how everybody knows somebody that can acquire the LED's and they just need to make a panel, blah, blah, blah. I tell you now, the china man comith....haha.

So far the nanner search hasn't been terribly taxing. I wish I had noticed earlier or started searching immediately but the last time I grew this strain I didn't have any heremies. I hate looking around seeing all those seeds developing, but it ain't that big of a deal. I do have one that I wish I had cloned. It's a beast, it's already frosty, been the healthiest of the bunch and no signs of hermies on her. Too bad.

just leave a few nodes of popcorn on the bottom when you harvest then reveg and clone :blsmoke:

The thought has crossed my mind. I'm not a big fan of the re-veg and I just don't think that I have the time to get it done and still get two harvests this year. I wish LED's were cheaper now so I could get it them for the summer time. I have a dimmable ballast and the night temps don't drop too fast. I just can't flower in the summer (economically), but if I knew I'd have an LED over the summer, I'd reveg this one and clone it while starting my next batch in seperate area and have my clones ready for next year winter. The gap in the summer actually makes this so difficult, but electric bills in the summer are already $500+ and I don't grow in the summer.

I considered it, but I can't figure out a good way to do outdoors. My neighborhood has kids and a school somewhat nearby, it's not something I really want to get into. Security is a huge concern outdoors, much better indoors. I can't grow with flouro's, end up using more energy to create less bud then it's worth for me. When it gets more expensive per watt to grow I don't want to be using the watts less efficiently.

LED's have my attention, but just too costly. Fortunately it's not in the too distant future that they will be a reasonable price and the solution will finally be here.

yeah, i feel the same way about LED's. after looking into them, it seems like they are finally getting the products right as far as effectiveness and being user friendly, but just need them to catch on more and get some good competition. idk, definitely worth some research though.
