Large Soil Containers. Rubbermade? 55 Gal Drum? Others?

The other day while scouting spots for my friend i came across an area where a bunch of trees had domino'd each other and theres so much open sky that the length of the day that it would get light is incredible, so i cant resist moving one plant. But, since theres a bunch of fallen down trees, theres no where to dig a hole.

So im wondering what i should use as a container. Ive deemed a five gallon bucket too small, i want this plant to be a beast with that much sun, and not to get root bound, so im thinking like a rubbermade or a 55 gal drum cut in half

Any ideas? What would yall do?

What are you gonna set the pot on top of the trees?? If there's room for a large pot, there's room for a hole.

as stated above, the best solution for u would be smartpots....id go with a min 25 gallons if u want beastly plants...i know they make them all the way up to at least a 300gallon smartpots if u wanna go bigger....ganj

I don't understand the thinking of some people here. 5 Gallons is more than enough for monster plants. Mary Jane life span is only 6-7 months or so. Do you really think you need more than 5 gallons? Better yet, everyone should start checking their root ball at the end of their grows. I am sure they will see that anything over 5 gallons is a overkill. As I stated in the other thread....Nurseries grow TREES in 5 gallon pots. You can use these grow bags that are only 25 cents each..... http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/itemdesc.asp?ic=COGB5 or you can use buckets that are a couple of dollars at Wal Mart. Here is a pic that shows the type of monsters you can get from 5 Gallon containers.....

Ya thats a decent size for a 5 gal Throwed but I think hes talking about a monster, monster Ive seen almost 14 foot tall plants in 25 gal. pots. 55 is a little overkill but the roots will fill it if you grow her out long.....shit one guy on here is using 225g smart pots so wrap your head around that one all you can do is watch and see what happens.
I use a 10 gal smart pot rolled down to a 5gal for indoor...makes plant grow wider and kepts it as short as possible(scrogged) and still grow a beast.

5 gallon is weak and would be root bound by mid-july, i have a 25 gallon pot i have been using for three years now
and every year after harvest i can grab the stalk and pull all the dirt out root bound. If you want a beast go 25+ with 25 being min.

hahahha anything over 5 gallons is overkill....that's absoluetly ridiculous!! Yes, those are beautiful plants in 5 gallon buckets, and yes, a 5 gallon bucket can grow very nice big plants, but to say anything bigger is overkill is crazy. I get 5 lbs per plant outdoors, and I'm not the best or am I getting the biggest outdoor yields inCali, and there is NO WAY your growing a 5 pounder ina 5 gallon bucket.....nonsense. Not to mention that a good size Ganga plant will be root bound in that 5 gallon bucket before you know it, and you'll be watering it twice a day. If you can't dig a hole, the size container you want depends on how big you really want em' to get. If you want a lb a plant, 5 gallons will work if you can water twice a day, if not, get somethin bigger.

Do you have pics of your 5 pound plants and the root ball? I'd love to see them. I never said I got 5 pound plants in 5 gallon buckets. Dude, it's non sense to say that someone will have to water twice a day just because a plant is in a 5 gallon bucket. I have plants in 5 gallon grow bags and don't have to do that. Here is a pic of one of my ladies that is 3 feet tall in a 5 gallon grow bag....



She is doing well and has PLENTY of room to stretch her roots. I water her once every 2-3 days. I have over 300 plants spread out between grow bags and in the ground. At the end of my grow I will post pics of their root ball for comparison so we can kill the hype around here. Here is a pic of one of mine in the ground too...

Dude let's get real here. People that grow plants like that go through alot and they damn sure don't grow them in 6-7 months like the rest of us do. They veg them inside for a long time and when they get massive they throw them outside. Don't make it seem like a person can get a big container and get plants just like those. There is no container bigger than the ground so I guess my plants will get just as big as those huh?

Dude, get real yourself, wake up and smell reality. You did well with the 5 gallon buckets, nice plants, but you can't grow monsters in them. So what if people veg an extra month or two indoors, the argument is that you think a 5 gallon bucket will suffice, and you've proved that you can grow in them, but to get giants you need a LOT more space. You say it's all hype, we tell you it's not. You really think it's hype? Then keep growing in 5 gallon buckets, you're not hurting anyone by growing in 5 gallon buckets, but please don't go around preaching The Way if you aren't fully informed yourself. In other words, quit telling people 5 gallon is good enough, because it's not good enough for big outdoor plants.

An extra month or two. Are you serious? You will need atleast a year or more to get plants that big. I started that 3 foot plant at the beginning of March. I consider that a month or two early. I will transplant her into the ground just to prove your month or two wrong. A 5 gallon will suffice for most of us around here, but if a person is a exception to the rule and do crazy shit like veg inside for over a year then I agree a 5 gallon container will not work. Though for the average person that starts a grow from seed/clone in Feb to Apr then a 5 gallon bucket will be PLENTY. I really doubt most here are growing for more than 6-7 months. If the OP goes with a 55 gallon container right now he is only wasting money because he WILL NOT fill that pot out in 2011.

Dude, save the bullshit. I would love to see the pics of your own grows that last 6-7 months with plants that big. I think it is a crazy to lead a RIU member to think he can get a plant that big if he goes with a big container. I swear some of you need to tell the truth and stop exaggerating. If growing from seed/clone, you can't get 3 to 5 pound plants in 6-7 months no matter what you do.

Just keep growing in 5 gallon pots...lol...and stick around till october. The outdoor section will be a much different looking place in 6 months.
