Koolkat's Aerogarden

High folks! First time poster, but old hippie grower. Been growing with Aeros(I have 2 regs and 2 pro 100's).. One tip to give better results is to throw a air stone, hooked to a fish air pump. This alone will increase your grow rate 25 to 40%. Get a pump with 2 air outlets, and charge your replentishing water jug with the extra air stone too. I start with 7 plants, then weed 4 out, and use the tomato config. for placement, giving you 3 of your best plants. After a month to 6 weeks the plant roots will get a little crowded. You may wonder how to get this mess of tangled roots untangled. Right? Pull off Aero top, seperate roots best you can using fingers and snips(the roots can take it, just be gentle as possible. Now hold, plant and roots(you will need help), now feed root up threw top, following the plant out, hand over hand(like a ponytail). Rest roots in water, and proceed with other 2 plants. Take a plastic bin(I used a plastic file box with flat lid), and cut 3 holes, the size of the Aero pots, so it snaps in TIGHT. Fill 1/2 way with your nutients, throw in a airstone bubbler, snap on lid. Now to get that big mess of root into the new top. My girlfriend thought this one up. Take the roots, and put then in a clear, thin bag(newpaper delivery bags are cool), up to plant stem. Grip bag around stem, guide the bottom of bag, and roots threw hole, hand over hand, squeezing gently to get threw the hole. When root and bag are threw the hole, gently pull away bag the rest of the way threw the hole. This helps glide the root threw without damage. Trust me! Now snap down plant into hole. My plants went threw no shock, in fact in a couple hours you could see them spread their wings, enjoying the root and plant space. As far as lighting now, jury rig your Aero light to work, &/or get clamp-on light from Steath Hydro. Been growing over 25 years, if you have any questions, just say high! Steve aka koolkat

hey my aerogarden is coming in and im wondering wht setting i should use and are the nut. it comes with enough?
I use the salad setting for growing 'em up - the solution drips 24/7 on this setting. If your garden comes with the herb kit, the nutes are ok, but throw away the one for "sprouting" - they will fry your roots. With the other kits the starters and maintenance are ok - just be leary of anything labeled sprouting. I follow the two week cycle with the nutes and empty the reservoir each time I add new nutes. I enhance the reservoir with a couple drops of h2o2 and a pinch of Piranha and Floralicious Grow. Keep an eye on your ph - I run between 5.5 and 6.5. Water temp is important also, so buy a cheap floating thermometer when you buy your airstones and fan. Walmart rocks for cheap doodads for your set up. Also, the Pro 100 runs hotter than the standard model, but you can set the lights for 24hrs. With the standard garden, I have to turn the lights on manually. I set the timing to turn off right around the time I wake up in the morning, so I make coffee, turn the lights on and check on my girls!. Read up all the threads on Aerogardens - lots of excellent advice out there. I have learned a lot here, so thanks to the other folks posting here. :)

If you plan to grow to the finish your grow in the aerogarden, I would suggest cutting back the lights to 12/12 at four weeks. At four weeks, my aeros were drinking one gallon of water EVERY DAY - the reservoir only holds 14 cups. You have to devote too much time and energy to tending your grow, if you don't want your massive root structure high and dry (altho some folks say this is a good thing....) If all goes well, your yield should be 1-2ozs. It's tough for me to say cuz I've never finished in my Aeros. They are great giving seedlings a concentrated growth at the beginning, but they outgrow the capacity of the Aero very quickly. You may want to consider keeping all seven of your plants in a "sea of green" set up. Let me know how your grow progresses.
