Kaya Gold 5 gallon bucket outdoor grow.

Ok, I wasn't planning to do a full fledge grow journal, but things are going pretty well, so I changed my mind. I posted some of these pics in Newbie Central last week, so if you've already seen sorry.

I got 5 feminized Kaya Gold seeds from Nirvana, and I started in 16oz stadium cups on April 6th. Didn't do any pre-germination, just put them in the dirt, got it good and moist with a spray bottle, then covered with clear plastic to create a greenhouse effect. Kept them in the dark for the first 36 hours, then started under CFL's. They broke through the soil on the 3rd day.

They stayed in the stadium cups for 2 weeks. They were 6" tall, when I moved them to 5 gallon buckets on April 23rd.

Oh, I forgot, I'm using Miracle Grow Moisture Control Potting soil. Don't believe people who say it's no good.

The attached pics were taken last week on May 25th I think. Date stamp on the camera is wrong, I have re-set for new pics. Since, the Miracle grow moister control soil already has fertilizer, at this point I have done no supplemental feeding. It says that it feeds for 3 months, but I don't think that means for 4 ft tall pot plants.

I got the Kaya Gold because Nirvana says that it is easy to grow and can take harsh conditions. It gets pretty hot here. Now some people say that the miracle grow soil that already has fertilizer is too hot for seedlings. Perhaps that is the case with some strains, but it hasn't bothered the Kaya Gold.

It's been unusually cloudy, so the plants have stretched some, but not too bad. They're looking good so far.

Ok, fast forward. I gave them some miracle grow all purpose plant food on May 29th. Like I said, they have grown so fast, I think they used up all of the food that was in the soild. The miracle grow is 28-8-16.

It takes about 8 gallons of water to get these 5 five gallon buckets good and wet. So what I did was give them about 4 gallons of water first got the dirt wet, then 4 gallons of half strength miracle grow.

I can tell a difference already, not sure if it will show in the pics. Fixed the date stamp on the camera. They are all showing as females, I'm a little concerned that the cloudy weather is actually making them flower.

Actually, looking at the pics you can tell a pretty noticable difference after the feeding.

Thanks man. We've had some crazy cloudy weather, I think they would look even better if we could get a week of straight sunshine.

They can get pretty big in 5 gallon containers, you should probably top, or LST or something.

Well the sun has come out with a vengence. It's been in the mid 90's last 3 days. It's supposed to drop back to the low to mid 80's next week and be sunny. You really have to wate a lot in 5 gallon containers when it's that hot. Gave them a second feeding on June 4th 7 days after the first. Mixed at 2/3rd strenght.

Anyone have suggestions on a feeding schedule in 5 gallon containers?

OK, anyone who looks at my journal I need some advice. I am including some pics I took today and you can look at the past pics. Sorry, the ones from today are not very good.

These plants are lined up in a pretty narrow opening in the woods. The opening does run kind of east to west, so the sun tracks through. It comes through one end and they get direct sunlight from about 7am to 10 am, then it is shady and filtered for a couple of hours, and they get direct light again from noon until 4pm or so. So, anywhere from maybe 5 to 7 hours.

Notice how the plants height almost looks like a staircase. The one in the front is about 4ft tall, the one in the back is about 6ft tall. Before you say anything, I do rotate them to try to give them a fairly equal amount of light.

The 4ft tall plant actually appears to be flowering. My camera doesn't focus enough to really show it, but it definitely is different from the others.

So what should I do? I rotated their location again today.

But, I'm not so sure that it's the light. As I was reviewing seed banks, there was quite a few people who swore that Nirvana did not send them what they ordered. I had never ordered from them before. So, did they not have 5 kaya gold female seeds and sent me a couple of other kinds? Kaya Gold is supposed to be sativa dominant, but to be honest the plants look a lot different. Or maybe the breeder was not so great. Maybe it even has some autoflowering traits. I don't know

I'm debating on if I should just accept that it is flowering and switch it to blooming nutrients.

Kaya Gold is supposed to take harsh conditions, I took that to mean hot.
It has been around 94degrees for the high the last 5 days or so, and it calls for the same for the next week. You really have to water in containers when it is that hot. I'm hauling water every day and a half. I started giving the plant that is flowering blooming nutrietrients today.

Ok, so I was complaining about cloudy weather and hoping for more sunshine. We'll be careful of what you wish for.

We had 20 days in the spring that reached 90 degrees.

And then the first week of summer was brutal. 95,96,97 every day. And to make matters worse, I had to go out of town for 5 days. When it is that hot, they need watering every day since they are in 5 gallon containers. I had a friend that watered them for me once during that 5 days. I watered really good when I left on Tuesday, he watered on Friday, and then I got back on Sunday.

I've lost a lot of the main fan leaves on the plant. I'm not sure if it is the heat, and the week that they really didn't get enough water. I'm also not sure if I'm feeding properly. Too much? Too little. The first couple of feedings I did half strenght, and every 7 days. I moved up to full strenght, and stuck with 7 days. I started to get some yellowing, so I wasn't sure if I was feeding enough, so I moved it to 5 days.

A few more pictures. Changed the setting maybe they will be clearer.

fricken trees already! how tall are they?

Those look awesome! You may need to dig some holes soon and throw them in the ground. They may out grow their 5 gal buckets.

I've got one that started flowering in June that's around 4 ft tall

The tallest one is about 8 ft, and the other 3 are around 6-7ft.

An update. All of my plants are flowering now. The short one started back in June, not sure what happened there, but I think it will be finished in less than a month.

I had to bury the buckets about a 1/3 down in the ground, because the wind kept blowing them over, this gave them more stablity.

I also had to stake and tie the plants because they were getting so top heavy.

Sorry, I'm a lousy photographer with a piece of shit camera. I can't get closeups of the flowering withouth them being blury, but you can tell by the mass developing in the main colas.
