Just A Couple of Q's...

My first question is if anybody here knows if sex is pre-determined or if it varies depending on the environment conditions? My other question is when cloning, do you take cuttings off of the node, or off of the main stem?

well the most I know is they SAY that if a plant is stressed a lot during the vegetative stage it's chances of being female are greater.just what I heard other than that I thinks it's a waiting game and you have to wait till flowering

And I beleive when cloning you cut off the top and let sit in water till it grows roots and then plant in soil

well well, noob talk...

stress will not produce more female, in worst case it plainly kill the plant! lots of stress will not produce female, it actually can push a plant into losing it sex, becoming a hermaphrodite, which is a freakin nightmare to a good grower!

Cloning:
for cloning purpose cuttings are taken of an plant, this plant should be not in flower as this harshly reduce the chance of a successful clone to grow. this is therefore used during the vegging state of the plant and cuttings for cloning should be young shots of the plant since the have the highest success rate for a good clone to grow off.

the sex of a pant is determent thru flowering it, means to cut the light cycle back to 12/12...
smart growers use for this a clone of the plant in question instead of the plant itself to get a early answer to this without wasting a plant nor precious time...

plants in nature come under all kinds of stress ALL THE TIME my freind, are they all hermaphrodites? to suggest that u can alter a plants sex is crazy lol i mean do u see people goin round tryin to get a all male plant to go hermie and produce buds no cuz it dosent happen like that.

natural stress comes in a little dosis or in one whopper that kills your plant straight away such as an deer having it for lunch, but in a hydrosys you can stress out a plant that much that it will do that without dieing, and a hermie doesn't produce anything really at all.

did you know that you can use certain acids to alter the sex of a plant for example? i guess not, as well that the same stuff is used on walnuts in calie to increase the yield of those...

you know, this is getting me to dumb, to argue with you... so whatever, i rather get productive and take a look in my grow if everything is fine there instead to risk higher blood pressure because of a noob!

Doobsday, nothing mean intended, but every time I turn around you are giving answers with nothing to back it up with, purely your opinions. When people come asking for advice, they are anxious to get the info they want, but they want facts. Remember when you were just learning, and how much mis-information you found? It got to the point that you had to take notes when you found a reliable source, because there is so much crap out there to be had. Becoming a source of quality information only helps to further this glorious plant all that much more.

Green Nobody gave some good advice as usual. GreenNobody IS somebody.
(lol, now you know I'm stoned)

420in808, everybody is going to have an opinion on every question that you can think to ask, you need to decide what info to keep and what to discard, on your own. So simply put, you need to have some good ol common sense.

I wondered this very same question, and got all kinds of weird and stupid answers as I researched it. (I was told about, and even tried the birth control method.) The best info I could come up with came from 2 different sources, (1) an old timer, organic grower who I trust totally. When this person gives me advice, I shut up and listen....and I take notes. This person taught me about the molasses trick I shared with this forum earlier.
(2) I figured....go to the source, go to the seed experts, so I went to Dutch Passion seed company to get answers. This is what I learned form DP:

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors.

The environmental factors that influence gender are:

* a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
* a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
* a higher humidity will give more females.
* a lower temperature will give more females.
* more blue light will give more females.
* Fewer hours of light will give more females.

It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions.

My organic grower friend tells me that she uses this method all the time, and she is way too cheap to ever buy feminized seeds, she tells me that she averages a 90% female to male ratio.

There's a thread somewhere here on this very subject.
I hope you find this as helpful as I did when I got it.

Peace

im just speaking from personal experience like i presume everyone here is, if it conflicts with how you do things then thats fine, thats how we learn freind.

As for doobsday, beavis and butthead rocked, but, maybe you might wanna think about some of the stuff you say before it's said, but thanx for the help man.
