Michigan Court of Appeals judges will hear arguments Thursday on a case that could have serious repercussions for church members: Can what you confess to your pastor be used against you in a court of law?

A three-judge panel of the court is being asked to decide whether a Baptist pastor in Belleville violated Michigan's priest-penitent privilege by testifying against a church member in a rape case.

"This is a very dangerous case because it could have very serious repercussions for religion," the rape suspect's lawyer, Raymond Cassar of Farmington Hills, said Tuesday. "If a pastor is allowed to testify against a member of his church about privileged communications, no one will want to confess their sins to their pastors anymore."

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Teri Odette argued in court documents that the privilege doesn't apply in this case

I don't understand why it shouldn't be obstruction of justice if he doesn't testify.

What if the person you're confessing to is a worse criminal than you are? Nothing is sacred anymore...im not religious but I do know people who are and confession is a big way for them to unload a lot of things...what happens to those people when they lose confidence in the people they trust?

They start having to rely on themselves... ;-)
That's true...and I agree with you on it but where does this kind of thing stop? Next is dr patient confidentiality. The trick for them os slowly but surely remove our rights to privacy until we are all computer chipped little robots...

How is it different than catholics shuffling around molestors so they can avoid prosecution?
It is no churches job to hide any rapists or molestors. A true pastor would encourage the rapist to turn himself in so the victim could begin healing

Isn't doctor patient confidentiality only valid as long as it doesn't have anything to do with anything illegal?

Durr. that's exactly what is happening. Let all the atheists and Elephant worshippers laugh on something they think is totally useless. meanwhile all confidentiality will be lost as other walls get broken down. Doctors, Parents, any fucking person can become a NARC, thx to your new Police State. In Douche We Trust

Finally for gays it will be illegal to even think about anuses and hot men holding them in their beds at night so when a gay guy goes to the plumber, i mean doctor and gets an anal exam, they would get turned in to the PooPoo Police for vile deeds against humanity and then go to jail for years of involuntary ass pounding. Funny world :)
SO avoid the 666 chip, gays. They will read your minds

That is completely ridiculous. A confession to your priest should be protected form the cops.
It should be the same as saying something to your lawyer.

I'm sure there are people trying to get rid of that confidentiality arrangement too.

I think they should be protected. It may seem like you're doing good, but you're really doing a lot of harm to these people's culture. Nobody would want to confess anymore and it would change the way they relate to their God. If it were a minority religion people would be going apeshit.

This is the golden opportunity for the Catholic Church to start an aggressive brand-awareness campaign. They'll never turn you into the cops, not when they have an exclusive and lucrative vendor contract with Purgatory. cn
