Is topping pointless/harmful?

That pretty much goes against everything they say in the book I have. Of course it was published in the 70's...

PRUNING YOUR PLANTS

You can increase foliage production if you prune your plants.
Clipping will encourage secondary growth and allow light to reach
the less mature leaves.
You should prune your plants for the first time when they are
three weeks old. Cut the top of the plant, severing the stalk just
above one of the leaf clusters.
These clippings can be dried and smoked as the first rewards of
your labors. Don't expect more than a little buzz however. The
plants are still young and have not had time to reach a mature state
of high potency.

When you prune off the tops of your plants the secondary
growth above each leaf. They will be stimulated and will grow into almost
like branches themselves. Many leaf clusters will grow out of
these branches and more branches will grow above each leaf.
By pruning your plants you can get them to grow bushy rather
tall and spindly. When the secondary branches get at least four
sets of leaves, it is time to prune them just as you did the main stalk
the first time you trimmed. Out of each of the four leaves you left on
the secondary branch, four new secondary branches will be
stimulated to grow and so on. Clip the new secondary branches about every ten days.

You may also trim off main leaf clusters to promote secondary
growth. Taking off some of the big leaves will allow more light to
reach the branches underneath them. The top leaves of each branch
are the best and so by stimulating more branches to grow, you will
have more top leaves.

As the plants grow you can continue pruning them in this
fashion. The clippings will provide you with a constant stash and at
the same time, your plant will be producing more and more leaves.
The quality of the plant also increases as the plant gets older. You'll
just get more and more and it will get better and better.

you could cut down your veg tome by topping young and lst both new tops around to make a full canopy of tops.......... if you have a lot of plants it can be time consuming to lst them all and easier to just top em a few times
Whatt he hell does lst mean?? Thanks :bigjoint:

Topping - in most cases - lowers yield, but it limits height, so it's a good trade off in the indoor garden.

I don't understand this

topping a plant you would get 4 or 2 colas instead of 1

Let's say they are 30 gram colas

So let's compare 120 grams to 30

increases yeild

you want to top when using artificial lights so you have more monster bud sites at the top of the canopy

Instead of having one cola and the rest are popcorn buds

look into uncle Bens thread on topping

Topping helped me for my most recent indoor grow...

After she was topped I lst'd the 4 main colas that were created and she looks great. There is a total of 7 big colas on this plant.

These pictures were taken about a week or so ago and she looks even better now.

i dunno... topping enabled me to get 1 1/2 zips off of one 28.5 inch tall plant, with 6 colas

waste of energy huh :p

it just dosnt make sense to cut off your future top bud when you can tie it low and then let the other ones grow higher up and then release the one you tied down and this makes sativas look indica lol and if you do this real young then you dont got to do nothing the rest of the grow it grows like a indica bush lol good luck tying your plants down and i feel sorry for all the toppers still out there

when i posted this i forgot to include a pic lol this plant was at least 2 ounces and it was probably about 28 inches tall in this pic im holding it from the base and pushing a branch up and opening it out so the other colas go down and all out

there would be at least 8 big ones instead of the seven if you never took off that top

I topped for the first time after reading Uncle's Ben's thread,
Personally it's a lot easier to top then lst.
