In the medieval period the king claimed ownership of all deer. He liked to go hunting. And if you were caught you'd be killed.

Today no one claims ownership of the deer, but one needs to get a liscense and do it in season. Although I suspect if you're living in the back woods off the grid you could get away with it forever.

Today, no one owns a deer until it is shot. Once shot, the deer belongs to the hunter.

Seeking a license is the same thing as asking permission. The people who grant permission and take your money, claim ownership of the deer, that's why their permission is required.

The King simply morphed into a bureaucracy.

Yes, there are people that don't ask for permission and who eat lots of venison.

Nonsense. The license cannot be refused for arbitrary reasons, where a request to the king could be. The reason we have licenses is so we can manage the population.

Having a license system allows us to monitor how many hunters we have, which allows us to populate a limit to harvest each hunter can take. Its a way of managing the deer population and anyone can get a license except for felons, and even then I think they can get a bow license.

The Canadian gas pipeline was refused for arbitrary reasons by our current king.... Well, they were not really arbitrary, millions of dollars of donations from a billionaire eco-loon were on the line.

So in order to mechanically launch a pointed stick with feathers on one end, in order to get something to eat, a felon that has never harmed anybody needs to ask the owner(s) of the deer for permission?
