The pool at my main gym absolutely forbids extended underwater breath holding. They actually kick people out of the gym (for good) for doing it. Because some young guys were having "contests" and one of them actually passed out in the water from lack of oxygen and almost drowned because his friends thought he was still just holding his breath..

I hold my breath momentarily when squatting heavy or lifting heavy.

Also called "the Valsalva maneuver ". This helps with intra abdominal pressure which ultimately stabilizes the spine and helps keep it in a braced neutral position throughout the movement.

Usually done with heavy compound lifts like squat or dead lift, when you really need your spine to stay braced throughout the entire movement.
