Is Cuba that bad?

Relations between the US and communist Cuba apparently reached an historic highpoint yesterday when the State Department's Cuban representative, Edward Lee, stated that so far communications between the 2 countries have achieved a "very open dialogue", for the 1st time in 50 years. That dialogue hinged upon human rights, and the ability to emigrate and the ability of its citizens to protest against governments policies without retribution were the highlighted issues. This opening has apparently been in in the works for months, and actually only became apparent with the infamous handshake between Raul Castro and Obama at last weeks funeral service for Nelson Mandela. What I would personally like to know is why these same standards are seemingly ignored with that last bastion of Communism in the world, China. What? Mao good, Lenin bad? It seems to me that good old capitalism will suck off anybody, as long as there is a dollar in it, even though that country helped to kill hundreds of thousands of US service men and women in Korea and Viet Nam, plus the support of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, who killed another million or so, and China still today occupies Tibet. I personally am sick of these double standards, wither it be Cuba or China, or Israel for that matter. So Cuba is the bad guy, while we lick China's lychees. Fuck Capitalism

The thing that gets me most is that most of the 'free worlds' elected government dare not be seen to have the Dalai Lama has a guest for fear of Chinese disfavour...
They're going to be the next power - I cannot imagine what kind of humanitarian standards we can expect....
I also hate Capitalism but my Wife is Ukrainian and, believe me, Communism is worse!

I've been to GITMO and from what I could see it's a beautiful island. This entire embargo thing only has hurt the citizens of Cuba and did nothing it was intended to do (Topple Castro). The cold war has been over for decades, and there's no reason to continue our lack of diplomatic and trade relations with Cuba.

Agreed. I would love to go to Cuba.

But china.... China will collapse under it's own weight. It always has. It is the worlds oldest existing civilization I think. Several times throughout it's history it has risen to great heights, always to fall.

About the same time as Columbus sailed the Chinese were developing a sophisticated maritime trade network. Their ships were far more advanced than European contemporaries. Then it all stopped.

The one child system is the root of China's demise. One of my undergrad professors was from china. Awesome guy. He laid out a very strong case for why china will fall. I cannot remember the details. But I don't expect them to be what most folks expect they will be.

The US has bullied Cuba forever...!
In 1946 Lucky Luciano was released after 10 years of a 50 year sentence and deported to Italy.
Months later he showed up in Havana and started to make it his base.
(A famous Mob Conclave took place where, it is believed, the decision to kill Bugsy Seigel was made).
When the State Dep learned of Lucky's presence in Cuba they started an embargo of medicines and threatened a trade embargo of sugar (a massive part of the islands economy).
Luciano was deported back to Italy.

Tony Olivia faked being his brother to escape Cuba. No Cuba is not bad, because Tony told me so.
