Is anyone else having problems with Aerogarden nutrient tabs?

I've been using 1 small tab and changing the reservoir each week for weeks 2-5, as per the FAQ, but my plants are looking pale and yellowish, as if they are suffering from nitrogen deficiency. Has anyone got any suggestions like increasing the dose, adding a supplement, or just changing to different nutrients?

Thanks

You should be using the smallest Tab "Starter Nutrient Tab". I started with 1/2 of one of those per week the first 2 weeks, then I went one standard per week for one week; then introduced my own veg and Flower Nutes and left the AG tabs in the drawer.

I'm not a fan of A/G's nutes for what we're doing. You can use them but they're designed for six to seven herb and vegetable plants. I can't help but think that our M/J has different nutrient requirements. If you're close to a hydroponics store you might want to investigate Technaflora's recipe for success. They're easy to use liquid nutes and I've had excellent results with them. There are other brands to investigate as well.

The AG tabs are fine at first, no worries. 1st hand experience. As HSA noted, who know the makeup of the AG Nutes, they can be intended for multiple plants.. Take it easy with them and you will be fine

Mine are working ok for me now...but as I get closer to Flowering, I think I will pick up FoxFarm or something....not sure I wanna keep going with AG nutes cause like HSA said they're designed for all these different veggies...

The tabs that I have been using came with a used Aerogarden that I bought off eBay. They look as if they have been absorbing water, and may have leached nitrates. Either that, or my pH is out, and it is causing lockout. I've tested the pH with wide range test strips, and it looks about right, but I guess I need to do a more accurate test, maybe invest in a pH pen. Has anyone else had similar experience? If I'm going to change to different nutrients, it needs to be to something easy to use, and available in Europe.

you should dissolve those tabs before you drop 'em into the res. let them sit in the new Gallon of water prior to till dissolved.

Yes, I've been doing that. I also noticed that they weren't dissolving very easily, so I ground the last one with a mortar and pestle before dissolving it in the water that I was going to add. I'm also suspicious that my tap water has a lot of chlorine in it, so I've just boiled a gallon ready for my next batch. That will be the first batch with a large tab rather than a small tab, so hopefully that will give my plants a boost. Failing that, I'll go down the route of checking and correcting pH before I abandon the Aerogarden tabs altogether. I'm considering one-part nutrients for my next grow, like Ionic or Vitalink. Is that a good idea, or should I go straight to a two-part? I'm trying not to run before I can walk.

Thanks.

I think Aerogrow has dropped the tablets. I recently got a Master Gardner seed kit and noticed that instead of nutrient tablets they are now including liquid nutrients. They look like the little packets of soy sauce you get at a carryout. They include two different amounts, a 5.5 ml and an 8 ml.

Re: Liquid rather then Tabs. Nice, didn't know that. I'll have to check my local supplier and see if they have swapped out stock.

serengetiuk: Yeah, crush 'em up if need be. It will allow for a more even distribution of nutes when completely dissolved.
Sorry if I already mentioned the water. Loose the Tap water and go with Distilled or Spring Water from your local Grocery store. (Tap water killed many of my plants.. It sucked!!!! ) Now I use distilled water and I've not checked the PH or even worried about it...

Good luck!

That's good info. I'll finish this grow before I decide to persevere with Aerogarden nutrients, but I'll make sure that if I buy a Master Gardener kit in future it contains the liquid nutrients.

I just received my pH pen and checked the pH in my reservoir. It was 6.7, and my tap water also has high pH. If I had used distilled water I would probably have been OK, but I think the pH would still have been a little high. I'm going to stick with tap water for now,but correct the nutrient solution pH down to 5.8. I'll see how the rest of the grow goes, and then decide whether to change to Canna Aqua for the next grow. It's a good learning exercise, and I'm also finding out whether I might be able to get reasonable results while keeping the operation as simple and cheap as possible. By the way, my local water company adds chlorine to the tap water, but not chloramine.

Thanks for your interest and advice.

do they get wet inside the sealed plastic bag that the nutrients come in? Mine do that also, I havent gotten them wet yet they seem to be gaining moisture inside the sealed plastic.. weird! I have been using 1 large tab per week, and also tap water :( and one of my plants has a bit of yellow on the edges... do you know if im adding too much or not enough? and i am definitely switching to distilled water after reading this thread!!! that could also be why the color is off :S
