Is 600hps the most efficent?

I have limited information on hid lighting at the moment. My information has come from growers who have used or in the process of using hid's with relativly decent results. I have never used an led and after seeing what they ask for the same wattage they can keep em. I have noticed alot of successful farmers using a 400 hps or a 600hps, then ive seen two 400's in a room doing verywell as well as two 600'hps doing likewise. My question is this can EXPERIANCED hid users break down the real pro's and con's to these wattage's? I dont wanna stray from hps as its served me verywell to this point. I am more concerned with getting the best bang for my buck sorta speak for what i spend on lighting (hids) please. Thankyou for your time.

The only con to HID lighting is heat. If you can handle that the more watts the better. Most efficient. I believe it's 600w. The more lumen the better, even though lumen doesn't exactly effect the plant it allows for better penetration.

In terms of HID lighting the 600 watter is the most efficient. The reasons are 1) you can get the same amount of lumens hitting your canopy as a 1000 watter if you close the distance. Lumens is the measurement of light and it is an inverse proportional ratio. Closer the distance of your light the more lumnens your canopy gets hit; 2) the heat produced by a 600 watter is less than a 1000 watter; 3) the electrical consumption of a 600 watter is less than a 1000 watter. In my case for flowering I could have chose a 1000 watter for flowering but I chose to run 2 600 watters. I cover more distance with the two lights than I could with a 1000 watter.

So reading alittle bit on a 600watt hps says it should cover a 4'x4' area. Now that being said, hid's -heat means most tents will need 1) inline sucking out heat and another sucking in cool or cold air? To be honest in colder months i have area's of the building that get real cold so access to cold air to regulate heat should be managable.(i'm hoping). Thankyou for your insight as i have been racking the brain on maximizing my space. growlab 120 is what i was gonna use to flower if all works out.

Intake fans aren't necessary until you get into larger tents. Like 6x6 and up IMO. Passive intake works fine for me and a lot of others.

yeah its the most efficent, it produces about 15 to 20% more lumes per watt then the next most efficent wich is i belive the 400watter. But if you put a 1000watter in a coolyube and close the distance then you will get faster growth and more lummens then with the 600watter but its not that smart to close the distance with a 1000 watter since the 1000watter is ment to cover a bigger
area

i bought a 1000 watt system thinking the bigger the better and can do more, is 600s the way to go for some reason over 1000's?

As we type to one another im budgeting in a 6'x6' tent for me and the wifey! One that accomidates both 4 and 6inch ports preferably. Also i have a hortilux600watt hps in a cooltube about 2 feet above first week flowering babies im thinking i need to understand the lumens -distance alot more. i'm thinking this alone will help maximize potential and space! Why thankyou guys for the help gosh darn it i learned something today here AGAIN! LOVE IT!

Lumen is a calculation of visible light. Seeing as how plants don't have eyes they can't see light. BUT they can and do take in light energy. The deeper it goes the more bud growth you will have. That's why more lumen is better. And with more watts you get more lumen.

We're all looking for good penetration:)...the 600w HID will cover about a 4 x 4 area and the penetration is about 6'. My large tent was designed for 4 600w bulbs with very good ventilation. Again, I like better "stuff" so I went with Lumatek ballasts and Hortilux HPS. I may add a 1,000w to the 2 bulb set up yet TBD. I want one area of the tent growing longer flowering sativas and the other half hybrids...the remaining 1/4 has a 13K BTU A/C unit LOL.

can you will you recommend a tent thats an upgrade from the growlab 120 im using? I am all ears and am looking for good options brother numsi!

power consumption to lumens wise the 600's are king .That being said there is no replacement for displacement. Also something not being mentioned is bulbs, which are almost as important as the wattage.a good quality bulb will out perform most of the stock bulbs that come with lighting kits.Just look around prices range from 45 -200 bucks for a 1000 watt sodium. There is a reason for that.personally i would take 2 600's over a thousand any day

If you stick with GL I think there's a 120L and my veg tent is the GL145. The bigger tent is the GL240 with Hercules supports. I read a bunch of reviews and the Jardin tents came out a bit better in overall ease of entry...especially the zippers. Just check for light leaks whatever you choose. The latest buzz in tents is Gorilla and I think they have a 6x6.
