Is 5000k not as good as people say?

I converted an old mars hydro to 5000k, using (4) Luxeon G3 1208's by Phillips Lumileds. The PDF is down below

http://www.lumileds.com/uploads/600/DS162-pdf

I thought it would be great for vegging, I have a nice 260w Citizen 3500k DIY build that I have used for flower, but I think it's too much LED for veg. I also want to say I have never vegged with COBs so maybe beginners error, flower no complaints my citi kicks ass.

But so far this Luxeon Mars build has been somewhat disappointing, one plant has grown accustomed to it and has done fine. Others were so bad I just killed them because they looked terrible.

I grow in promix, the Mars actually used to be good in veg, I'd have a little cal/mag probs but nothing crazy, some calimagic would make that go away but since using this Mars hack it's been terrible.

Sprouted 6 plants, 3 I just killed after 2 weeks because they were so yellow it was beyond belief and no growth. One plant actually is doing well at day 26(7 tight nodes at 7"), it shows cal/mag deficiency though but when I feed it, it burns the damn thing.

The leaves on these other two are yellow already(2 weeks), never had these problems before and it's irritating. I can't figure out if it's too much light, cal/mag, the spectrum, or a mositure problem, since this damn thing runs so cool the tent never gets above 70F and the promix just stays wet all the time....

Light is at 36", 100 watts total, 35v*4=140*0.7A=98w

The efficacy of the bulbs is 145l/w so that should be good. Any help would be appreciated, this light should be pretty good on paper, I mean certainly better than the original.

Any help would be nice,

5k should be perfect. Maybe it's working everything your plant has to offer n needs more nutes. Are you using a full line or organic?
Baby plants or teens?
I wouldn't think it's your 5k.

My 5000k (vero 29 gen 7) light has been in use for about 20 days now so I can't really say for certain, but it looks like it is absolutely killing it in there.

why dont you go buy a few $5 2700K A19 bulbs and throw them in there as supplemental? $20 will give you 60W of efficient red
I like my screw on led bulbs for veg. Shit, even got them in my flower room. w/ plenty o good bud under them that is out of the fixtures footprint.
Using the Sylvanias spot lights (15w) w/ what says is 14• optics. Looks like 60• though.

Alright will do. Should I run them at the same height as the 5k unit or more like cfl? 4 should do it in your opinion? Looking at the PDF the lumileds are great in terms of output, but the spectrum is really short on any red. Their light emitting surface is really small too, I was shocked when I received them and even more so when I had to solder the damn things XD.

Any way you can get temps up a tad more? Heat mat maybe?
3 ft from plants to light is much too far away. There will be a massive stretch Imo.
Keep the plants short n squat
Get it lowered to 18"
I've 3 x 23 watt 1212s 3500k on a heatsink bar for 66 watts Total at 16" from plants.

Bingo.

You can't let the soil stay wet, it has to dry out. You're killing your roots, leading to sickly plants that won't grow.

Exactly nothing to do with your light except that you were used to using a much hotter light source and the LED fooled you.

My 3K QB light and my 3500K Citizen 1812's are not having any issues vegging my plants, but the 6500K 1212's are just kicking ass and VERY close to my beloved 600W Blue MH. Previously had a 5000K Cree light for veg that did great also and it's doing so for another grower now too from what I have been told.

110 watts of COBS these are single engine COB's in 6500K Citizen 1212's too closet is a 2x4...................

I would guess 36 inches is too far away.

There is hardly any stretch from this distance yet though, Ill lower it down to 20" and see if that helps at all. I appreciate all the help thus far guys

Well I've always kept my coco/promix soils pretty wet, but with the old mars the promix would at least get somewhat dry on top. I'll lower it and see if the temps can get a little higher and if that will aid the little guys. I'm gonna take cobbys advice and throw some 2700k in there soon, but maybe I'll wait to see if its the distance/wetness that has been the factor. Thanks for all the help guys
