Interesting dilemma

So I transported a germinated seed into my plasic cup with soil three days ago. It germinated pretty quickly & healthy.

Today when it still hadent poked through the surface I decided to take a peak at the soil to see if there were any issues. Well i took the soil out i found a perfectly healthy root about 4 inches long. The seed still attached and the two leaves have yet to start to develop.

My room conditions are pretty consistent at 75 degrees and 75 humidity. I have a single daylight cfl which is plenty of light for a seedling. Its about 3 inches away from the surface of the soil.

I returned the seeling and the soil back into the cup to continue growing - not a big deal if it doesnt work out because it was a freebee seed anyhow.

But my question is: is it possible my seedling could become rootbound before even breaking the surface? Is there an underlying problem with my set up which is slowing my vegetative growth?

Im using a typical dixie cup which i think is about 6 inches deep. I figured i could keep the seedling in the cup for atleast a few weeks.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Dusty

Give it a little more time. Don't dig your seeds up unless you've given up and are just curious.

They should not become rootbound So soon.

No. It should be good for a couple weeks. Once the roots start to curl around the bottom of the cup its time. Next time when putting the germinated seed into your cup just bury the root and leave the seed almost exposed. It can be hard for them to shake the seed casing sometimes, especially if under the soil.

Good stuff thanks

My first thought is "How deep did you bury the seed, in the first place?". A sprouted seed should only be buried 1/4" (or less). It sounds like that poor thing has been fighting it's way up from the bottom!

I put 2 seedlings in their final pot and one disappeared. Several weeks later, after cleaning out the pot and reusing the soil for a geranium or something, it appeared. I named it Phoenix, see how it goes.

He said the seed is 3 inches from the surface of the soil.
What he said was - "I have a single daylight cfl which is plenty of light for a seedling. Its about 3 inches away from the surface of the soil.".

To me that means the daylight CFL is about 3" from the surface, not the seed.
