In my life's experience, Pot has always had a Negative Connotation

Wikipedia said:
Connotation is a subjective cultural and/or emotional coloration in addition to the explicit or denotative meaning of any specific word or phrase in a language, i.i. emotional association with a word.
Whenever I hear my parents say it, it's usually like, "Some kids smoking pot"

Or on the news, "Illegal pot growing house raided"

Or from somebody, "You dont smoke pot do you??"

I generally think that most people that say pot (besides people that blazed when pot was a good word) have negative feelings toward Marijuana.

I mean why does the news call it Pot? Why not Marijuana to be correct?

They call cocaine cocaine, not Coke
They call Ecstasy Ecstasy, not beans

What angers me is when they discuss it and refer to it as Pot. I wish they did call it the Neutral word - Marijuana.

I think that when somebody talks about legalizing marijuana and they refer to it as, "pot" it tends to make it look like a bad idea, almost as if the negativity associated with the word pot is transferred into negativity towards the overall effort to legalize the plant.

Am I alone on this one?

I want to hear your thoughts

On the colloquialism topic what pisses me off is the umbrella word "drugs." Mainstream media includes weed with heroin and cocaine but calll cigs, alchohol, and coffee "Stimulants". And Pills are "Medication." But really they are all mind-altering substances and thus by definition; DRUGS. But I, as a pot smoker, am a "drug user" but Rush Limbaugh is a "drinker" and "prescription pill user". His fucking illegally obtained pain medicine contains the same substances as meth amphetamines but when that fucker uses it, it is ok. Its all so fucking hypocritical. I hate stupid shit like the USA's drug policy, specifically drug scheduling that has little to no scientific justification and was designed around reactive politics, showing little to no concern for learning about a substance and its addictive tendencies.

It is true my man

I think the world would be an amazing place if it was based on science, not religion and politics.

What if all the scientists and researchers that have ever researched Marijuana voted on weather or not to legalize it rather than having all this research sitting around with the people that make the decisions that matter not paying attention to it

Check out what Israel is doing with marijuana. I watched a show where some Israeli scientist were making pure 100% thc hash! They have been making great strides in regulating THC intake through pills. Sometimes I wish I were a Jew. Jesus was way too much of a badass to not be God's son -its this that prevents my conversion

I get the negative vibe off the word pot as well, unless it's people who smoke it that are saying it. I also think marijuana often has a negative vibe to it as well. It's the word the gov used to turn people against something they knew as cannabis. From what I've gathered (I've written a few pot themed papers for school purposes), many people thought that marijuana was bad, as the gov propaganda told them, but they had no clue that marijuana was actually cannabis, the name everyone knew it by.

"What the hell is marijuana? This is cannabis!" I'm sure a lot of people told this to police when the first law was passed.

With my friends I dont care what it is called - one of my buddy calls pot "drugs" as in "let's do some drugs guys" - we always get a chuckle out of the irony - when I talk to others I call it Cannabis.

I know the definition of "drug" but I don't consider anything in its raw form a "drug." That includes coca leaves and opium poppies. IMO anything that is manufactured or altered by man is a drug.

I hate it when cops say " Dope". Anyways if you call drugs dope your prob a duche anyways

I used to leave the house and use that word

Parent: Where are you going?
Me (halfway out the door): Slingin' dope!
Parent: Okay sweetie.

Dope is just one of those words that you know is made up bullshit

I hear 'pot' and I think Jr High language... I remember one of my friends coming up to me when he was 12 and said, "Hey man, I got some pot seeds, wanna see them?"

I was already getting high and said, "Why dude, I toss them out of my bags regularly."

He was totally bummed that he didn't impress me, but every time I hear the word 'pot' I think of that kid ...

I opt for weed or mj... but I've gotten some of my friends to join me in old school and calling it 'Scooby Snacks.' Great for confusing their kids ... They think we're talking about the vanilla crackers at the grocery store.

Peace,

Feel free man ... We used that in high school around our parents because we were all Scooby fans as kids. We'd have to make a run out to get some weed and if parents were around we'd say, "Man we need some Scoobies or 'Scooby Snacks." and come home with a stashed bag and some cookies. Every once ina while we'd come home and mom would have made cookies and tell us she had 'freshly made scooby snacks' Every time we did that it took everything we had to not laugh hystarically at her .. man those days rocked!

Yes, fucking exactly. There's no such thing as alcoholism, or being an alcoholic, it's fucking ADDICTION. I'm not addicted to marijuana, nor do I wanna fight someone or annoy the fuck out of my friends when I smoke it.

And yea, Ive always had kind of a negative association with the word pot. It just doesn't seem right, because things don't get fried or roasted in a pot. I've never heared a buddy go dudee, I'm so boiled! I'm sure some of u prolly have though.

.......weird, I just realized that I've never actually said the word 'Pot' vocally before but I have 'typed' it on numerous occasions. As for the label 'Pothead', I say tht all the damn time.

It really depends of the context but IMHO I don't think it's inherently negative to refer to weed as pot but I personally see all words as just a pattern of sound and nothing more.

I find it to be quite comical when people are so utterly defeated by specific fluctuations of sound, or furthermore 'Air vibrations' (thats what sound IS). LMAO...I mean really.
