I'm a bit confused about drying

Just started my first harvest of some Easyryders and have my plants hanging in a dark closet with temps about 75-80 and RH about 50-60. My RH was a tad high, so I put a box fan on low on the floor beneath the plants just in case. I also put a Damp Rid in there for good measure.

I understand that I want the the stem to snap when I break it, but my question is how long can I expect this to take? Some documents say this about a week to two weeks and others say three weeks or longer. What does your experience say?

i tend to find that if i wait for the stems to snap instead of bending them that they buds are much too dry for my liking and i can never get them back to the moisture levels that i really prefer..
so instead of waiting for the stems to snap, i like to go by the feel of the buds instead.. it's kind of hard to explain, but once the outside of the buds start to feel dry instead of that damn or wet feeling that you get from fresh cut buds, into the jars they go.. the first day or two doing it this way, you've really got to pay attention to the moisture levels in the buds though.. being that they are moister than they would be if you'd done it the stem snapping way, if you leave them closed up in jars for too long, the buds will get super wet from the moisture that is still in them, so it's very important to keep opening the jars to allow the air to exchange freely.. sometimes, if i find that they are getting too moist still, i'll leave them in the jars, but will simply leave the lids off for a few hours or so till i feel that they are at the right moisture levels again before i put the lids back on again.. it does take a lil getting used to doing it this way as a lot of it is done by feel, but at the same rate i feel that the end result is much better and less on the dry side of things, the way i find that i and most other people who sample my products like it..

Most people will say you still want them to have some moisture in them when you go to put them in the jars. If the stems are snapping, they are VERY dry. Stems are more likely to just bend if they have any moisture since the stems are so strong. They also say that slowly removing the moisture by drying the outside of bud, then putting it in the jar to let the moisture re-distribute throughout the bud, then drying it again. This must be done with care though! Don't try this method unless you are willing to check your buds regularly to make sure they aren't drying out too much or staying in jars too long. If you over dry them once, the original moisture is gone for good. On the other hand, if you leave them in the jars too long, you will get mold on the buds and you'll ruin the whole jar (really sucks, happened to me once with some solid bud).

So, after that horrible accident, I tend to dry my buds out all the way before putting them in the jar so I can keep them in the jars long-term until I smoke them. This works for me because I only grow for personal use, so I have a lot of bud all at once from a grow, then slowly use it down. Obviously, I don't want the bud to be completely dry when I go to smoke it (too harsh) so I take a smaller jar (a week or two's worth of bud) then do one of two things to make it re-gain some moisture. My preferred way is to take a small peice (like a couple square inches) of orange peel and putt it in the jar with the bud overnight. By the next day, the bud has a nice amount of moisture (not too much or too little) and might have a faint hint of orange (very subtle if at any). The other way, if I don't have any oranges or suitable fruit (I've also done apple and mango that worked fine) on hand, is to take a piece paper towel and slightly dampen it (not dripping wet, just damp), fold it up to a small square, and put it in the jar with the overly dried bud overnight. I get the same result without any hint of fruit smell.

I recognize that some people believe you lose some of the good flavor of the bud by not drying it out properly (curing it). So, I recommend trying it both ways and deciding what works best for you. I just failed at keeping track of how moist one great jar of weed was and made it mouldy and ruined it, so I'd rather still have great bud that might not have it's peak flavor (still great) without the mold.

I made a drying box out of an old pc case and a pc fan rigged to an ac adapter. I cut off the fan leaves and any big leaves covering the bud. Takes about 3 days. The small fan leaves and sugar leaves a bit crispy. Then I jar and keep them open about 15-20 min each day and burp several times daily until the buds don't stick together and then at least burp once or twice daily. So in about 1-2 weeks from harvest I have superdank cured buds and no mold
