I Just Upgraded My LED UFO To A 150W HPS.

Let me start out by saying, i like the LED UFO, and it is powerful enough to grow plants, and it is powerful enough for flowering/budding cannabis plants. I plan to keep mine, even though i can still get over a hundred bucks for it.

What the advertisers say, that it is the same as a 400W HPS, is just bullshit. While the light intensity is worthy when under the lamp, it does not cover a lot of area. I'd say the true maximum footprint of the LED UFO, is about 2X2. The LEDs are very directional, and put out a lot of light straight downward.

The HID, when using a good reflector, spreads the light a lot wider. Plus, there is heat. Under the LEDs, there is no heat, or very little.

There is a lot of talk about LED VS HPS (vs MH vs T5 vs CFL) and now that i have used several of these, i wanted to share my thoughts.

LED: it is a worthy light. For the price, and coverage area, you are better off with a 150W or 250W HPS, 175W or 250W MH.

HPS: Everybody knows this is the best overall light. The spectrum isnt perfect, but the intensity can't be beat. The efficiency (lumen/watt ratio) of the HPS is better than fluoro and MH.

CFL: Yea, they kind of work, but they are not very efficient and they run hot. Without a reflector, foliage needs to be within inches to get enough light. Good to start off with, because you can buy them everywhere, and they are cheap.

T5: I'll let you know. I plan on ordering some with my next paycheck.

MH: I havent used this light for plants personally, so i can't comment. I think the MH light is much more pleasing to the human eye than the HPS.

I havent taken any pictures of my grow yet, but i'll post some once i do.

I put this in the gardening section, because of what i'm growing with the light. Red pepper, orange bell peppers, jalapenos, and soon will be tabasco peppers too. Plus cilantro, sage, catnip, basil, rosemary, oregano. The herbs will go under the T5 lights once the peppers get bigger, and take up all the space under the 150W HPS.

The lighting question is always controversial ..i think hps is the best bang for the buck..and the good leds are just to expensive ....
