Ok so I should of not been a slacker and did this before it was an issue.......But I have a 6 gal dwc...4 pot set up but only 2 plants.......The one has always been smaller.....I would like to seperate them.....However........at this point some 55 days into grow the roots have become quite intertwined.........Hypothetically......How much damage/stress is it gonna cause if I cut some roots......Where I would cut it I assume 1 plant will be more effected than the other.....I could just leave them together...was just kinda wondering if anyone has had any root cutting scenarios whether on purpose or accidentally.....

Thanks in advance.......For checking my bad decision hypothetical thing lol

55 days into the grow... but are they still vegging? If you really need them separated you can just cut them apart and if the plant is still vegging there will be no real harm. Give them at least two weeks to recover. If they are in bud then leave them.

I grow my mother in a 5gal reservoir and I have had root rot to what you are experiencing now tangling and her root mass engulfing my reservoir.I started timidly trimming roots and have found you can cut up to 20% to 30% off (try not to cut the thick main roots) of the smaller hair like roots with no ill effect.Actually i have found that with a small reservoir that if you plan on keeping large plants in it you will at some point actually need to give them a hair cut now and then.Once i new i was going to kill one of my mothers do to her overgrowing my space and cut 85% of her (large and small roots) off.Next morning she was in shock looked all droopy and wilted.I actually think she would have recovered but it would have taken a week or so and i just made another mother. With the size of your root mas if you want to separate them put on some latex gloves hold one pot and right underneath the pot hold onto the root mas and slowly pull them apart carefully. You will break some but if you take your time it will be beneficial to your reservior to free up some space for the much needed oxygen.Too much root mas in a small reservoir equals not enough oxygen.

you can cut them apart, the same thing happend to me,the one plant was stunted, it did flower but weeks after the other plant did.the plant that did good yielded a little over 3 ozs the stunted plant yielded a little over a z and it took forever. good luck

I've raped the crap out of my girls root systems in the past to no reall ill effect that i can see. An issue i could see arising though is that if you simply cut the roots apart, then each root mass may now contain a good amount of dead root mass from the other plant which is gonna sit around and rot away.
