Had a discussion with a buddy we differ in opinion. Not to sway your opinion in any way I wont tell you who said what.

What is better for big bugs?

1 600W HPS overhead

or

4 150W HPS surrounding plant

well it really depends... are you growing 1 plant...
1 plant it'd probably do pretty good with the 4 150's.... but if your doing more then that... you'll need more then 4 of them to get good coverage... and remember.... the smaller the wattage... the less distance the light travels right... so those smaller lights you got = smaller plants..... *provided your doing more then 1*

that's just my thoughts on it....

oh!
lol another question... how big is your space??? .... if your using the 4 150's you need space for the 4 ballists... and keep them outta the room if you can, they warm up real good.

This was a hypothetical with 1 plant.

This was a question of what is better - one overhead lamp or four surrounding lamps.

One of us was arguing that the overhead with the higher wattage gives the plant more bright light

The other was saying that the side lighting would be benificial for denser buds in a single cola setup.

I'd have to say that the one larger light for the single cola setup would be the way to go... since... you have only one bud at the top of your plant... it would get better lumens form a larger wattage light directly above it... *provide you have a nice reflective hood*
Now if your going for a larger wider plant... with more buds on it... having the 4 lights that you could move around so the side of the plant as well as the top of the plant has the same lighting... I would think it would give you denser buds.

LOL but this is all my way of thinking about it.... also if you had the 4 lights around the one plant... you'd have to have hoods to reflect as much light towards the plant....

4- 150HPS would give you roughly 64,000 lumens
1- 600HPS would give you 95,000 lumens, it would be easier to cool as well.

I don't know about the cooling it depends on where you have the ballists located.... I've got a 100 watt HPS as well as a 400 watt HPS and my 100 watt's ballist gets pretty dam hot and to have 4 for 150 watt... you'd have to keep it out of your grow area.... I only really noticed a 2-3C degree increase from my 100 - 400.... and I only have a 50cfm bathroom fan for exhaust.

Cooling can be a bitch! I was so excited when I got my 400w hps... till I put it in my closet and the temps were over 90! And that's just with the 1 ballast in there, and ya it gets too hot to touch it. Wish i'd've got an air cooled hood, but I got the temps well under control in there now, with a fan blowin right on the ballast within the hood, and portable ac

if I were you I'd try to get that ballist outta the room.. the light is hott enough ;) I found that out with my 100 watt with the ballist in the same room...
