HPS vs LED? Why not HPS + LED?

I see continual battles back and forth about what's superior, LED or HPS. Watt for watt, gram for gram, the battle continues to have evidence from both sides.

LED has the 'science' behind it - plant specific light spectrums but has vary narrow covarage. HPS has the raw intensity with wide coverage, but it has wasted energy released as heat or unusable spectrums of light.

So, I decided to combine the two.

The set-up consists of:
4x 90w LED UFO grow lights
1x 400w HPS

LED's are 'tri-spectrum.' Two are Red/Blue/White and two are Red/Blue/Orange. The HPS is a red sodium bulb. This video was taken on day 25 of flowering.

I Like the setup. I have 400watt solarmax 2-630nm red rbo ufo, 2 660 nm red rbo ufo and 1 rbow 660 red ufo and 2 4ft repti-10 bulbs. Also co2 boost. All in Miracle grow potting soil. ya i know it sucks. Also Just Banged with PK 9/18. Bugs, Root bound once, Nutrient lockout twice because of ph, One 12 hour day at 120. Week five LST kept plant all under 14" so far. Main colas are Double fist and 3 to 4 on each plant are single fist size. I attribute the great growth to the mix of LED and HPS. I get pics when i can. first grow ever!

I Am no scientist but my thoughts are led have a very narrow bandwith. Be it 630 660 470 440 610.be it that they are very specific and effective they are lacking the propper Spectrum for Photo systems I (680nm) and PhotosystemsII(700nm). Also the luminecence of our plant is around 740 nm . I have no idea why our plant giving off heat would be anything but counter productive in a controlled environment but the Photo systems are very important. most people supplement there led with cfl at 2700k that is effective but very innefecient most RED hps carry a color temperature of 2100k sending much more light to the photosystems not being banged by the leds. Also hitting luminecence for what its worth.
Most people assume that if everything is perfect you will get big fat strong buds. partly true from what ive read and discovered. BUT we constantly beat up a plant to make stonger and get a reaction. High fans to blow it around, low humidity to force resin production, Lack of root water to shock the plant, uv light to promote the plant to protect itself and running around in the buff. And i Would have to think That HPS Provides The IR radiation that penetrates deep into the bud to force it to get bigger to protect itself. So LED Grows Hps Helps and smacks it around a bit . That being said what would be a good ratio, test will tell.

Update as of 3-16-10, this is day 44. Only two weeks left. We'll see how yield turns out then.

led's are still years away from being a product that can be relied upon. hid's on the other hand, have been around for years, and have a proven track record. what more do you need to know?

Have you ever used LED's? I've been using them, and I can say they aren't NEARLY as far away from usuable as people say. I prefer LED to HPS because of the next to no heat, they last 10x as long, and they don't burn my plants.

I've run pure HPS and pure LED, pure HPS is more yield, but LEDs give higher quality buds (larger trichomes).

I'm tired of people with a hardon for HPS talking shit about LEDs. LEDs are ready for use. Yes, they need some work, but that is only going to push them completely ahead of HPS.

Post with evidence supporting your claim or don't post. Rumors are why people still think marijuana kills brain cells. Research for yourself, stop listening to trolls.

I've been flowering with a 400watt hps for awhile now but after seeing a reliable medical marijuana grower "rumpleforeskin" doing an led challenge my thoughts about led's have changed. I'm definitely picking up a couple of ufo's for my summer grow. Do a search on rumpleforsekin led challenge on google & you will see a grow from start to finish with tons of pics that he pulled off 7.2oz's. He was using 2 180watt ufo's to get that amount. I'll be happy to get half of that with 2 90watt ufo's. I love my hps but led's do work. You may get more with the hps but I like the idea with not having the heat signature & lower electric bills. I will finally be able to have a perpetual grow by using led's & keep my cost below $35 a month on my electric bill for growing. I only grow to satisfy myself. I'm sure the hps users who knock led's are small time dealers that can't see themselves using led's because it will effect income. To that I say, Get a real job !!

For sure, good luck! :)

My first grow with LEDs was about 6.5 oz with 4 90 watt UFOs (I pulled them a week early because of mites). They guy you are talking about got a bit more, but my results were similar; so hoping for 3+ oz off of two UFOs is very reasonable.

:weed: Keep us posted on your 2 UFO grow.

With my 400watt hps I pull off 4'zs easily from one 3foot ak48. I'm going to use the ufos my first go around also on just one 3foot ak48 but I'm going to supercrop the plant & try to get the same 4'zs out if it. If I can't get 4'zs but can get 3'zs I'll be very happy. After that grow I'll start doing a perpetual grow with led's. It will be worth it for my situation to use led's for summer grows to cut cost on electricity. Besides growing one indoors I do also grow one outdoors so my headstash is intact if I take a 1oz loss indoors. :bigjoint: In the winter I'll go back to the hps for warmth. 41-50 days until harvest for my current indoor grow & then I can focus on getting the ufos.

i am about to order a 90W led ufo. currently using 150w mh and 360w of cfl, if i add the 90W ufo i'm hoping to get 4oz's per plant...growing 4 plants..
think i can do it?

I would think so as long as you strategically position all your lights around your plant. it's doable

P.S. When making your purchase for the ufo's look for ones that use 660-662nm red led's. I only say that because the successful grow I have seen uses them. You can find sellers on eBay with the 660s but a lot of them are selling 630nm red led's. I don't know much about led's or if that makes a difference between 630, 660, & 662nm. I'm only going by what I've seen work. This doesn't mean to use a ufo that is strictly with red led's. Don't get that !! You want a triband (red blue orange) just look for those with the reds in the 660-662nm range

P.S. When I purchase mine they will have to have 662nm red led's

I had 12 plants that I flowered at about 12"-14" tall (from clones). They gave me about 15-20g per plant, finished up in 6 1/2 - 7 weeks (pulled early from mites).

If you want bigger plants, then be sure to be good with your light placement and plant training; LED's don't penetrate the foliage as well as HPS.
