When it's time for a replacement bulb, it is critical to buy the right one for your light system. HID (High Intensity Discharge) bulbs must match the type and wattage of your ballast exactly. For example, a metal halide ballast will not run a high pressure sodium (HPS) bulb, and a 400 watt ballast will not run a 1000 watt bulb. The exception to this rule are special conversion bulbs which are designed to run off one type of ballast but provide the other type of light.
