hps heat issues

so i just started my seedlings under cfls. they are big bang by greenhouse. i have a 400w hps with a metal halide conversion bulb. i dont want to fry the lil babies so im waiting till they get a little stronger until i turn on the 400 watter. this is my first grow with a hps and i am wondering if a fan blowing on the light and one blowing on the ballast will be enough to keep the heat to a point where the plants can survive. Also how high above the tops should the light be. any advice would be appreciated

first off ,where are you growin,,closet book shelf,,pc ,,depends on the space you have em in,,as too what you need,,I grow in a small closet,,temps can easily reach over a 100 in the summer,,unless you have air flow in,,and out,,and air movement inside,,I started with a 400 watt hps,,had high temps,,learned about ventilation here,,upgraded to a 600 watt,,and temps are lower,,so what's up??

say i cant open the door for a day or two is there any type of cooling system that i could use. i cant run any duct or anything. is there like an a/c unit or something that can help keep it cool enough they wont die

Thats a tight aare and if you cant modify it heat wil be an issue.A portable ac unit can be bought but that would take most the space in there and cost about $40 at the cheap end

i mean the other side of the closet has clothes in it so i could probally get a unit on that side. do you think maybe i should just grow with cfls again.

Can you look into getting a cover for the light that has a built in cooling fan?

Don't Know;
How big is your grow space? I am using one 400 watt in an area 5 ft. sq.(25 sq.ft.) in acorner of my laundry room for mothers and veg and have had no problems with excess heat. I do have a window in the room open about 3 in. for ventilation in the warm weather, but I just close it when the outside temperatures drop. this does not seem to aversely affect growth. Good luck and keep on growing.

the high temperature today was 96 degrees f thats with just a fan blowing in there. now i also heard once that for co2 injecting rooms it good to have those temps should like the co2 boost bucket
