how to wire light socket

I bought a light socket with a gold and silver screws the gold one is in the middle and the silver is the screw piece so is the gold hot is that right and the silver goes to the threads ground k on an extention cord which one is hot the white or black the white is hot and black is ground ????? where does the green which is nutrual go on the socket or it dont ????

black is hot and goes to the gold or brass colored screw.
white is neutral and goes to the silver screw.
the green or bare wire is the ground. some sockets dont have a ground connection. if i mount the socket to an electrical box or a reflector then i connect the ground to the metal box or reflector.

thanks but what happens if u wire it up the oppisite any thing cause i did it totally opp. but it works so far so good but i did it the same way i had my plug so am i in the clear would it have worked if it was wrong or just blew a braker or the bulb or set fire. thanks alot man alittle late but safe than sorry right get back if u can asap

if you swapped the hot and neutral you will be ok just not general practice. same with neutral and ground.
but the hot and ground would trip the breaker.

you want the center tab in the socket to have power and the socket threads are the neutral. but will work either way.
