How can I prepare outdoor soil in a forested area but plenty of sunlight for next year's growing season? The area is NW OH. I have 1.5 acres to work with but am not planning on planting on the whole land.

find a good sun lit area dig about 6" down and 12" around for each plant or deeper then put your soil of choice and next year and plants... if thats not what your asking please explain...

Lime and till.
I second that, ammend the soil that is already there. If sandy, add vermiculite, if clay, add perlite. U want to know the PH of the soil u are working with. If swamps/ pine trees in area, PH is low, add dolo lime as recomended on the package. I* use all epsoma products whenever possible, cheap but good.

Thanks you all gave some good ideas. Along the lines of lime and till and getting the pH right, what about adding worm castings or fertilizer sticks or what not?

The amount of soil should be, at the very least, 3 times that of the perlite. When I say "soil" I mean compost included.

Till the existing soil as deeply as possible first. Then add about 4" of compost, and a thin layer of perlite, and till as deeply as possible again. I generally have to re-till the edges a third time.
Any organic material you add to soil is a good thing. It will reduce dependency of fertilizers as it encourages micro-organisms in the soil and of course worms. Just don't use raw materials. Let it age for 6 months first. Otherwise it will consume the nitrogen in the soil as it decomposes and starve your plants, making them severely anemic.

some advice from a certified Horticulturist. This seemed extremely useful when I read it.
