try 8", I found that to be about as close as I could get them. Ventilation depends on box size. Figure on a lot. They run hot. Don't put em in too small a box or you'll make plant jerky.

Get this and a fan controller, as much ventilation as you will need with room to grow. (this may be as cheap as you will ever see a 4" inline fan of quality) No, not my sale but I have bought from this guy before, awesome service

HTG Has a 4inch 80 cfm inline duct fan for twenty
I drive right by one all the time
You can get it on ebay also
My 150 hps cost me 67 bucks from them and comes with tempered glass so my plants have come within an inch or two with no problems
In fact My box runs cold now due to winter it runs in the low seventies like 71-73
I dont own an open air one so I dont know how much heats it puts out that way but mine is about the same as 8-10 cfls with out the fan

I've got 2 - 150s in my box, plus a couple of cfls. I've got the smallest bathroom fan I could find ( I think it's like 80cfm) from home dePOT, and even then in colder months I can throttle it back to half.
I've got the lamps in DIY cooled hoods. I can put glass in, but usually don't.
Regardless, I find my plants do better when the bulbs are at least 8" away. They don't seem to like to be too close, even though by my hand it's not too hot.

You know I had mine about 4 inches away and I backed off to about 8-10 inches and the stretched but in a healthy compact way

Ya know what im done with air cooled ventilation for my lights in general. Im thinkin water cooled lights yo!!! 400 watts!! 6 inches away from my plants!! Most def!!

yah thanks for advice on this thread, i was wondering if my 150w hps (69.50) would be able to use the 4 inch 80 cfm from htg supply also, and if so would i need a cooling flange and 4 in flexable ducting, its for a closet grow, and another thing is it supposed to suck the air away from the bulb or through the ducting/air being drawn through the fan?
