How Much Light?

Is the space being used only part of the equation when growing or are the number of plants also a factor?

I have seen 1000w lights with hoods that have an area cover of 5x5. If your grow room is 5x5 and covered in reflective material can you put as many plants as you want, given you have enough space to work (water)?

I have seen threads where people say 6-8 plants but, you can fit around 25 (3 gallon) plants in that area.

The growth may me an issue but, if you main line or lollipop that should be taken care of.

The problem with a bunch of plants is the problem with light penetration. you could do a scrog with 4 plants and be well pleased with the results

Good lights have an effective 'foot print', it is this area, that effectively dictates the area to be filled with plants, 3x3 for 400w, 4x4 for 600w, and 5x5 for 1Kw lights roughly, the average size of pot is 3 us gall or 15 liters of which 9 goes well under a 600w light, on average 9 plants to 3 feet high in 3 months, 1 month veg, 2 month bud

Kind of lost here. So, 9 plants under 600w? I am asking about 1000w.

This is the issue I was concerned about but, to help with this I plan to mainline 8 colas keeping everything the same height.

Is this your first grow or have you grown before? If its your first Id highly recommend not opting for a 1000w and going for a 250-the amount of wasted light/energy I see on this forum is crazy!People growing one small plant under a 600 and the like. Its one thing having a big powerful light but if youre not growing enough to utilize it its just a fucking wasteAlso, growing is great fun, with the right results its fantastic, but it can also be hard work. And if youre new you may think whats he talking about how can growing weed be work but everything soon gets old and becomes a chore, and thats everything from mixing soil to trimming .If its not your first please ignore my rant lol...

I have grown under 400w and 600w never more than 8 plants. I am just finishing up a 6 plant grow.

That is my concern if I go for a 1000w with 5x5 coverage I want to get as many plants as I can.

I first grew 2 plants under 400w and with the Cali energy costs it was a damn near waste.

I got news for you my friend. If you're running a 1000w HID you should also be using a light rail to increase your footprint to 5x8. It works for me and it will work for you too

Can u make the area larger? Are u working within the confines of a 5x5 room? Or the inside dimensions of a large tent? If not then expand ur area to make better use of all that light. If you're confined to 5x5 I personally would go with less wattage.

Well, the room is actually closer to 6x5.

-If 1000w covers 5x5 and from what I have read that is with a good hood, why would it be too much? What would you use instead 2-400w?

-I have never used a 1000w light so, I am trying to learn as much as I can.

No mate,if you want to see a bump check out some of my threads ... Nobody loves me boo fucking hoo ;'-(..lol
Seriously though Im not sure what dannyboy meant but it could be instead of using a light with a 5x5 footprint in a 5x5 arear you should maybe use a smaller lamp with a smaller footprint and leave yourself a bit of room to work?Fuck knows, good luck though mate:joint:

I don't use anything less than 600w as a general rule. And I am even using light rails to increase the footprint to 4x6 with the 600 waters. It's not about the proper footprint for 1000w. It's more like can you spread out that amount of wattage and still get quality dank. After a year or so of experimenting I just found light rails to be : A. Great for penetration to as much leaf surface area as possible and B. A more effective use of HID lighting. Light rails only work however if you're running with at least 600 watts and you don't spread out the light too much.
