Unless you live in the desert or another very arid climate I would just let nature do it's work. A lot of folks just starting out will practically babysit their plants and accidentally over water which will kill the plants. So keep an eye on the weather in your area and if you know there is going to be a dry spell make plans to go water your plant. General amount of water, soil not muddy, good drainage, not flooded, is fine just be careful not to water around the stem too closely. A constantly wet stem will lead to root rot and could kill the plant.

On the watering technique a lot of guerrilla growers who first put a young plant outdoors poke a small hole in a gallon jug or other large plastic bottle. This will allow water to trickle out of the jug continuously for a day or two depending on the size of the hole. For guerrilla growers it is also a good idea to only visit your plants only when you need too. Every two weeks is a good amount of time to periodically check up on your little soldiers.
